The term says it all: Deferred gratification is the willingness to put off the satisfaction of present desires in order for a greater gain in the future. This trait is critical for life success. According to Sigmund Freud's theory of personality, a person who is unable to delay gratification may possess an unbalanced id that the ego and superego are unable to control which tends to make him/her failure. Whereas Gratification is the positive emotional response of happiness in response to a fulfillment of a desire. Maturity is often defined as the ability to delay gratification (patience), and progress as the real or imagined perception of movement towards gratification.
