Hi,This is a good question.Not only fairy tales there are so many tales, short stories came into existence since so many years just like jataka tales, tenali raman,Akbar Birbal etc.,The main thing is that all these tales help them to improve their imaginative thinking.Other thing is that its a sort of relaxation for brain.It helps them to make their own stories.They cant come across all the experiences

Comics cartoons,fairy tales , all with lots of pictures, inspire the imagination of a kid. the way in which u narrate it, with lots of oh ahaa sounds & a bit of acting will give him more interest / she likes. So - I am very sure you must have got the answer to your question....folk tales and fairy tales with good illustration are the time tested and effective as per my personal experience
