Can anyone explain the special namaskaram that people do in front of Ganesha, i.e. they cross their arms and touch their ears and squat up and down?

That kind of namaskaram is normally prevalent in South India. This is done by poojaris at the time of closing of the temple. They ask forgivence for any mistakes that they may have performed during the day. Samw way people ask for forgivence for any mistakes that they may have comitted.
