This hints that he has some plans..........so hell come back....Both Dumbledore and Sirius are dead... and will not come back. Since the series is coming to an end - Rowling wants to finish as many charaters so that the entire shift of focus

Fawkes the phoenix is an integral character in the Harry Potter novels, in addition to being the pet of Dumbledore. At the close of the sixth book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Dumbledore hints both at his fiery nature and the role he may play in the seventh and final book. It is also a nod to Dumbledores revolutionary spirit, and the frequent ruckus he raises at the Ministry of Magic

The two have worked together on alchemy projects, presumably working with the Philosophers Stone itself to explore its properties.
