athlon is made by AMD. i have a AMD Turion 64 x 2 TL - 58 laptop, and it is very fast compared some intel models. but over all, Intel is Coke, AMD is Pepsi. Athlon is comparable to like Intel Celeron, which are slower. , for the same reason i wouldnt buy something like that myself.If as you say budget is not a problem, then upgrading to PCI-e might be a good move, i recommend socket 939 AMD CPU, something like an Athlon 64 3200, something like an Athlon 64 3200/3500 would do fine, or better yet, an Opteron from the 1 series.If you do decide to upgrade to PCI-e you will get a much better PCI-e card for your money than the AGP

The new M/b are coming with DDR2 slots. and u can get als the ddr1 board in the market...ddr2 ram are used in amd athlon motherboard...actually this depend on the type of a motherboard and is the motherboard is new one ddr...it depends on the MB, but the athlon is old enough that its most likely DDR. it should, also, accept sdram. the speed of the ram is going to be determined by both the MB and the CPU
