As far as i know, hindus shave their heads, as kesh daan is considered maha daan for their deceased family members

That is a ritual that is directed by the scripts. When religion and rituals are concerned there is no why or how or any other doubt. They are just followed. But, there is always some reason behind every Hindu ritual. This is a way to show respect for the deceased.
