The four yugas; Krita, Treta, Dwapara (Dvapara), and Kali, are an essential aspect of Hindu existence as they represent the cycle of degeneration and regeneration of humanity from an age of perfect harmony and absolute virtue, to an age of impiety and virtually no virtue. Prior to further examination of the cycle of humanity, it is important to understand that one year to humans is one day to the gods, 360 human years is one year to the gods. The length of time that each age lasts diminishes from one to the next. The Krita yuga lasts 1,728,000 human years (4,800 god years), the Treta yuga lasts 1,296,000 human years (3,600 god years), the Dwapara yuga lasts 864,000 human years (2,400 god years), and finally, the Kali yuga lasts 432,000 years (1,800 god years). As the ages progress, the condition of humanity digresses. The Krita yuga marks the beginning of the cycle. During this age, every aspect of life is good; people live according to the Hindu faith and are satisfied, vigorous, and prosperous. The next step in the cycle is the Treta yuga, a period during which man becomes increasingly argumentative and develop hidden agendas. Following the Treta yuga is the Dwapara yuga when negative human characteristics such as lying, arguing and addiction increase. The fourth and final age is the Kali yuga. During this age, also called the age of darkness or the Iron Age, only one quarter of the original virtue remains and humanity as a whole is depraved.

One thousand of these yugas equal one day of Brahma, which is called a kalpa. Brahma's lifespan is 100 years of his time. In each yuga there is a specific process of self-realization (yuga dharma).

SATYA YUGA - (sometimes also called krta-yuga): the golden age lasts 1,728,000 years. The process of self-realization in this yuga is meditation on Visnu. During this yuga the majority of the population is situated in the mode of goodness and the average life span at the beginning of the yuga is 100,000 years.

TRETA YUGA - also called the silver age, lasts 1,296,000 years and the process of self realization is the performance of opulent yajnas(sacrifices). The average life span is 10,000 years and the godly qualities decrease one fourth compared to the Satya yuga.
It is during this age that Varna-asrama-dharma is introduced.

DVAPARA YUGA - or the bronze age, lasts 864,000 years and the process of self realization is the worship of the deities within temples. Godly qualities are reduced to 50% by now and the average life expectancy is only 1000 years.

KALI YUGA - the iron age of hypocrisy and quarrel lasts 432,000 years. Lord Krsna appeared in His original, trancendental form right before the beginning of Kali Yuga. The process of self realization is sankirtana, the chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord. God consciousness is reduced to 25% of the population and life expectancy is only 100 years. By now already 5000 years of Kali yuga have passed and it is predicted that by the end of the yuga people will hardly be older than 20 years and their only food will be meat.

According to Hinduism 4 yugas are the Satya Yuga (or Krita Yuga), the Treta Yuga, the Dvapara Yuga and finally the Kali Yuga, which are equated with the Roman Golden, Silver, Bronze and Iron Ages respectively by E. Burgess [1]. According to Indian astronomy,[who?] the world is created, destroyed and recreated every 4,320,000 years (Maha Yuga) [2]. The cycles are said to repeat like the seasons, waxing and waning within a greater time-cycle of the creation and destruction of the universe. Like Summer, Spring, Winter and Autumn, each yuga involves stages or gradual changes which the earth and the consciousness of mankind goes through as a whole. A complete yuga cycle from a high Golden Age of enlightenment to a Dark Age and back again is said to be caused by the solar system's motion around a central sun.
