The tower over karpha graham (where the main deity is situated) is called vimanam and the tower in the entrance is called gopuram.

The vimanam or the central sanctorum is the defining feature of any Dravidian temple. The one at Tanjavur is the tallest, rising to a height of 650 feet from the ground. Built entirely of granite, and with intricate carvings and sculptures, this is a work of art unlike any.
