Surya Grahan, solar eclipse, is widely mentioned in the Holy Scriptures of Hinduism. There is also an interesting myth regarding the occurrence of Surya Grahan. It happened during the Samdura Manthan (churning of ocean) episode in the Puranas. Rahu (Demon) and Mohini, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, are the main characters in the incident.It is widely believed that to bath in the in Brahma Sarover in Kurukshetra is equal to performing the famous Ashwa Medha Yajna or Yagam mentioned in several Hindu scriptures. Aaditya mantra is recited during the grahan.

there are many tantric as well as vedic varying from single letter to stroram, kavacha, struthi, adhithya hrdayam, adhitya sahara nama and many others. any one of these will give you the same effect as all religious acts are effect giving as long as the feelings or bhavana is sincer. all external rictuals are limited only to keeping the karma indhriysa and ganyna indriya occupied, and performing action automatically with out disturbingf the dhyana of single point concentration of the dietiy. the communication between the two is only possible with feelings or bhavana. all rest are means designed to ensure that bhavana is pure and single pointed.

Gayatri mantra or Om must be chanted Hindu temples for darshan (seeing the deities) and puja ... of curd, milk, honey and ghee in the wee hours of the day ... can pitru dosha puja be done in rameswaram

The performance of Rituals at the time of Graha-Grastah – eclipse:
Generally it is to be understood that what you are proposing to do for rituals/pujas/ceremonies, etc., are NEVER to be done during a lunar or solar eclipse - graha-grasthah. Rather as mentioned earlier, if you notice ALL TEMPLES CLOSE at the time of an eclipse, nothing is cooked, no offerings are made, etc. Foodstuffs are covered, water is not stored, washing is not left out on the clothes line, etc. If one needs to eat then one does it before the eclipse comes into penumbra or leaves it until after the umbra and penumbra have completely passed - a maximum of but four or so hours. This is supported in Surya Siddhanta of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur Prabhupada, Chapter 4 texts 16 and 17 .
