The Annaprashana ceremony should be performed at the time when the child gains strength to digest cereal and preparations made from cereals. The first feeding of cereal commences with this ceremony. He who desires his child to be brilliant and famous should feed cooked rice mixed with ghee (clarified butter) or the rice mixed with honey, curd and ghee . The samskar ceremony for the first feeding commences with prayer, followed by Svastivachana, Shanitkarana and complete Samanya Prakarana. It is indicated that this ceremony should be performed on the day on which the child was born.

Annaprasam is the ceremony of giving the first solid food to a child. The rituals vary from region to region among the Hindus. In Kerala it is done in temples. After the child completes 4 months, an auspicious day is selected for the ceremony. The temple prepares the food, rice, vegetables, curd, salt & sweet payasam is kept in a plantain leaf, as prasad, & the child sitting on the father's lap is given the food by both the parents. salt & sour things & rice is not given to the child before this ritual.

The initiation of the child to solid food is known as Annaprasan. Food is first offered to God. Then the paternal grandmother mixes rice and milk in a silver bowl and feeds the child. Then a book, gold chain, pen and a knife are placed on a small wooden table. The child is then left free 15 yards (14 m) away from the table. As the child moves towards the table, he or she is believed to become associated with whichever of the four articles that he or she touches.

The qualities attributed to the four articles are:

Pen - Academician, Writer, Scholar
Book - Studious
Knife - Boldness
Gold - Wealth and Prosperity.

Annaprasan is a traditional ceremony for the child around his six month age ... So all I can say it was a very happy occasion and a very happy ‘Annaprasan’

For any function as a ritual puja is done for blessing of God and many puja/ wotrship is done for the following
1.A kid at say 3 yrs of age annaprsana is done in which cooked rice / or cooked rice with milk is given to his mouth
2.Similarily Aksharabhyasa at 5 yrs ag
3.Janevu function normally at 8 yrs to say 11 yrs so.In the retual the individual was given priliminary
manthras told to follow Sandhya vandanam
4.Then about marriage function at right age

The Annaprashana ceremony should be performed at the time when the child gains strength to digest cereal and preparations made from cereals. The first feeding of cereal commences with this ceremony. It is indicated that this ceremony should be performed on the day on which the child was born.

This is the ceremony for the first feeding of cooked rice. The object of this ceremony is to pray to the gods with Vedic Mantras to bless the child with good digestive powers, good thoughts and talents. It is performed when the child is six months old which is the weaning time. Susruta commends this weaning time as best for both the mother and the child.

Offerings are made to the goddess of speech and vigour. Prayers are offered so that the child´s senses have their full gratification and live a happy and contented life. The father feeds a little of the sweet food anointed with gold to the child with Mantras that say he feeds the child with food that may ensure a healthy life to the child and prevent ill-health.

Apart from the efficacy or otherwise of this ceremony, its observance creates in all concerned an awareness of the cumulative needs of the child at that age in a scientific and tender manner. Its systematic observance therefore ensures the results expected especially when fortified by Mantras.
