How will you explain Meera's Krishna Bhakti?  

Mirabai participated wholeheartedly in the Bhakti movement, which consisted of active devotion displayed and expressed through public, ecstatic, religious song and dance. The tolerant nature of this religious movement gave its members the ability to ignore the restrictions of caste, sex, and creed. This, in turn, allowed Mirabai to rise as a poet-saint through her songs. Mirabai's poetry was written in the form of song verses known as padas and mystical love poems called bhajans. She is credited with creating a unique raga, or mode in which her songs were to be sung, that which was named after her: Mira's Malar. Mirabai composed her songs in a combination of the Rajasthani and Braj Bhasa languages, but they have since been translated into Hindi, Rajasthani, and Gujarati.

There are anywhere from 400 to 1,300 songs attributed to Mirabai, but scholars believe she most likely composed somewhere between 103 and 200 padas. As a devotee of Krishna, she strove to celebrate her love for her god; to take credit for the composition of songs in his praise would have been considered an act of pride for a woman striving, ultimately, for a state of selflessness. As a result of this dynamic, it is difficult to arrive at a definitive account of those lyric poems actually written by Mirabai herself, compared to those attributed to her but not composed by her.

That is a strange mixture of Heart and Soul. Meera on the one hand had been a devotee of Lord Krishna.From her very infancy she had developed a devotion towards Krishna.In later years she felt too dedicated and too much involved with Krishna that there reached a stage that she abhored all the worldly wisdoms and remained dedicated to Krishna.It may be termed as a form of true love.In spite of the fact that Meera had to enter into wedlock, her mind,soul and body remained attached to Krishna.Never has there been such an example of true love based on devotion.
Meera was the true Saint, the true lover , the true devotee.That combination took her tp the altars where she became a Deity.

Meera was not like that. she had only one master- Lord. Mirabai (1498-1547) is a mystical poetess, singer and saint of the sixteenth century. Her compositions are popular allover India. She was a disciple of Shri Guru Ravidas and composed between 200 to 1300 devotional songs called bhajans. Her bhajans are in the bhakti tradition, and passionately praised Lord Krishna.

Mirabai was born in an aristocratic family of Rajputs at Merta in Nagaur District of Rajasthan. Her mother gave her a figurine of Lord Krishna when she was six years old, with which she always played, sang and talked. In 1516, she was married to the Prince of the Rajput kingdom of Mewar, Raja Bhoj. Her devotion to Lord Krishna was not acceptable to her husband and his family. She was so engrossed towards her love to Krishna that she often neglected her responsibilities. She even refused to worship the family deity, Durga. She visited the public temples and danced and sang in praise of her Lord with members of all castes.

At the age of 30, Mirabai went on pilgrimage to Mathura, Vrindavana, and finally to Dwarka. She spent most of her time in praying and worshipping Krishna. Her soulful devotional songs are sung in India even today. She was as a saint in the tradition of the Bhakti Movement of the 16th century which followed the path to salvation by devotion. Other saints of this movement are Kabir, Guru Nanak, Ramananda, Chaitanya.

Mirabai was a follower of the Saguna class of worshippers of Brahman. They believed that after death the Aatma (our soul) and Parmaatma (the supreme Aatma or God), will combine. She considered Krishna to be her husband, lord, lover, and master. An exceptional characteristic of Mirabai's poetry is that she completely surrendered herself to the love of Krishna with the use of subtle erotic imagery. Her writings were both, spiritual and sensual. She strongly believed that in her previous life she was one of the gopis of Vrindavan, deeply in love with Krishna. Like the gopis her sole motive of her life was the spiritual and physical union with her Lord.

Traditionally, Mirabai's poems are called a pada, a term that was used for small spiritual song by the 14th century preachers. It is usually consists of simple rhythms and contains a refrain within itself. Her anthology of songs is referred to as the Padavali. She used Vraja-bhasha, a dialect of Hindi which was spoken in and around Vrindavan in her poems. It is popularly believed that in a state of ecstasy she disappeared in the temple of Krishna in Dwarka and finally united with her lord.

Many of the details of Mirabai's life are pieced together from her poetry and the stories later recounted by members of her community. While Mirabai's hagiography is held as truth by followers of the bhakti tradition, the historical authenticity of most of her story is the subject of scholarly debate.
However the relentless torments and hostility interfered with her life of devotion and contemplation on Krishna. She sought the advice of learned men and saints. They advised her to leave the palace and return to Vrindavan. Secretly with some followers she slipped out of the palace and escaped to the holy city of Vrindavan. In Vrindavan Mirabai was free to worship Giridhara (Govinda) to her heart’s content. She would spend her time singing bhajans and in ecstatic communion with Krishna. Like a true bhakti she worshipped God wholeheartedly. The riches of the world offered no attraction to Mirabai; her only satisfaction came from her single minded devotion to Sri Krishna. Her soul was ever yearning for Krishna. She considered herself to be a gopi of Vrindavan, mad only with pure love for Krishna.

Even learned sadhus would come to her for inspiration. There is a story of one respected spiritual master who refused to speak to Mirabai because she was a woman. Mirabai replied there was only one real man in Vrindavan, Krishna; everyone else was a gopi of Krishna. On hearing this the spiritual teacher accepted the wisdom of Mirabai and agreed to talk to her. Later Mirabai would become his student. Vaishnava records indicate that the name of that Spiritual Master is Rupa Goswami, a disciple of Sri Krishna Caitanya.

That dark dweller in Brajj
Is my only refuge.
O my companion,
Worldly comfort is an illusion,
As soon you get it, it goes.
I have chosen the indestructible for my refuge,
Him whom the snake of death
Will not devour.

My beloved dwells in my heart all day,
I have actually seen that abode of joy.
Mira's lord is Hari, the indestructible.
My lord, I have taken refuge with Thee,

MEERA's poetry holds love for Krishna closer to her heart than the love for friends and family. She perceived Krishna to be her husband, lover, lord and master. The unique characteristic of MEERA'S poetry is the use of complete surrender to her love for Krishna.

Her longing for union with Krishna is predominant in Mira's poetry who says she wants to be "coloured with the colour of dusk" (dusk being the symbolic colour of Krishna). She believed that in her previous life she was one of the several gopis in Vrindavan, in love with Krishna. Much like the gopis, as mentioned in the life of Krishna, Mirabai looked upon Krishna as her lover, seeking spiritual and physical union with him. Her writings were at the same time, spiritual and highly devotional. Mirabai's songs portray a personal universe where the only existence was that of Krishna - her sole object of desire.

Of the many methods for achieving liberation, the path of Bhakti, or devotion, is the simplest and shortest way to experience the Divine. Bhakti lifts man to supreme heights. It is a Yoga. Yoga unites the bhakta with God.
Bhakti comprises various feelings, emotions and thoughts relating to God. It includes gratitude, reverence, adoration, love, thanksgiving, even fear of sin. But ultimately all descriptions must fail for, in truth, Bhakti, or devotion, is only understood when it is experienced. The Lord is understood only by the bhakta, and the bhakta is understood only by the Lord. In Bhakti Yoga everything is seen as the manifestation of the Divine beloved.

Faith, Love, Feeling, Yearning and Surrender to the Lord are some of the key ingredients of Bhakti.

Meera who always considered Krishna as her Lord or Swami has chosen this path of love to reach Krishna.She worshipped Him, she paid obeisance to Him, she developed a relationship with Him, and finally merged in Him.
