After delivery the new mother feels extremely hungry, especially so because she has to start feeding her newborn.
It is extremely important, therefore, that she should eat enough and eat very nutritious food.
Local food traditions may vary from place to place and from State to State, but generally speaking, Chapattis and Bhakris are easier to eat and digest, with vegetables, pulses and fruits.
Allopathy has no objection to rice being eaten in the post-partum period, however traditionalists feel that one should wait for 7 to 10 days before eating a full meal of rice ( they are scared that it may dealy healing of the stitches and potentiate any infection, if present ) but there is no Scientific basis for this.
Home-cooked fish, chicken and mutton can safely be eaten too.
'Fast food' , ice creams, colas and sweetmeats should be avoided totally, as they may cause indigestion in the baby and the mother as well.
Special foods such as methi kheer, methi konji, halim laddu, guar-gum laddu etc are definitely good for the mother. So is milk.
Stimulants such as tea and coffee should be taken in small, normal amounts only.
