First 12 nautical miles area from the coast is known as territorial waters of a country, next 12 nautical miles are known as contiguous zone, the next 200 miles are known as exclusive economic zone. Only after that the real international waters start. There is no visible line of demarcation to the passengers in a ship to show that they are travelling in territorial waters or international waters.
