If you are from England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, you are British. But you are also English, Scottish, Welsh, or Irish. These countries are all part of Great Britain. It is similar to the way that someone from Texas is a Texan (and that woulld correspond to being English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish), but they are also American the way one in the UK is British.
Those who live in the Republic of Ireland would, however, not call themselves British.
