how can i control pimples. And which is the best cream to control pimples?

Asked by ۩♫♪ ÑÁSIR ۩♫ in Beauty & Fashion at   9:55 AM on May 27, 2008

Vidya Anand's Answer

The roots of your facial hair tend to secrete more oil during summer and this too leads to an outbreak of pimples. There are a few things you can do that will help you keep those unbecoming pimples at arms length.

Wash,Wash,Wash

Yes, wash your face twice during the day with a mild face wash and dab it dry. If your skin is extra oily then three times a day. This will get rid of the excess oil and dirt on your face too.

Remember that if you wash your face excessively then you will strip your face off its moisture and your skin will be extra dry.

Cleansing Capers

Cleansing is an after wash routine.

Use a mild astringent or cleanser dabbed onto a piece of cotton to wipe your face gently in upward strokes.

Moisturise for Soft Skin

Use a water-based moisturiser with a sunscreen to keep the oil factor in check and prevent tanning.

Scrub for Beauty!

Use a face scrub to get rid of the dead skin cells and dirt on your face.

Apply a mixture of besan and rosewater on your face. Wash it off with tepid water once it dries. The besan helps get rid of the excess oil.

Foods and Juices

Water and fresh juices help detoxify and cleanse your system.

Besides, juices are packed with a lot natural vitamins, which will keep your body and skin healthy right through summer.

Include a lot of vegetables in your meal. If you are a non-vegetarian, then stay away from red-meats in the summer.

WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF WAX GENARATION IN EAR??????

Asked by surabhi in Personal Health at   7:02 PM on May 22, 2008

Vidya Anand's Answer

Ears produce wax and when too much wax is accumulated, it needs cleaning. However, don't insert a pin end, a matchstick or your nails to clean it out.

When you use ear buds, it tends to push the wax farther inside and causes accumulation of wax inside your ear, causing hearing problems in the long run.

Also, matchsticks, toothpicks, pin ends or nails may injure your ear canal or your ear drum, leading to loss of hearing.

Refrain for using cotton swabs, that is, cotton rolled on the end of a matchstick or a hair pin to clean your ears because there is a possibility that the cotton swab may remain inside your ear.

If you want to remove ear wax, go for wax dissolvent drops like Wax Solve. These over-the-counter drops are available with most chemistsThe drops dissolve the wax and help cleaning your ears. If there is too much wax accumulation, go to your ENT specialist. Your doctor will remove the wax, using a suction method.

If water enters your ears while you take a shower, you can use a blow drier near your ears to remove the moisture. The hair dryer will dry the water that has entered your ears just as it would dry your hair.

You can also remove moisture by inserting the corner of a dry cotton cloth and keeping it inside for sometime. This will absorb the moisture.

Remember, it is important to remove the moisture from your ears otherwise it will lead to a fungal infection.

Why does mouth ulcers happens? How they can be cured?

Asked by ramukuru in Personal Health at   8:05 PM on May 22, 2008

Vidya Anand's Answer

A mouth ulcer, also known as canker sore is basically an inflammation that appears on the tongue, lips, gums or inside of the cheeks. It is caused due to numerous factors including stress, vitamin deficiency, poor nutrition, poor dental hygiene, food allergies, etc." informs Dr. Kapil Salgia, General Physician, Bombay Hospital.

The ulcer can range in size from a sore as big as a pin head to a 25 paisa coin. And like a sore thumb, it either stands out individually or appears in clusters.

You don't have to fast or live on a diet of juices. Tackle ulcers with these handy remedies.

regular mouth ulcer can be safely ignored as it tends to heal itself in a span of a week to ten days. You can quicken the healing process by avoiding foods that aggravate ulcers. Some such foods include chewing gum, coffee, meat, spicy food, vinegar and other acidic food.

Be careful not to irritate the gums with hard toothbrush bristles or sharp edged foods such as chips etc.
Lack of vitamin C also causes ulcers. So when you feel a canker sore starting, have orange juice or eat fruits that are rich in vitamin C.

simple remedy to alleviate the tingling and burning sensation is to suck on ice cubes. This tends to numb the pain over a period of time.
Rinse your mouth at least twice a day with a mouthwash that contains glycerine, which protects the sores and peroxide which fights the bacteria.

Also, rinse your mouth four to five times a day with warm salt water to keep the inflammation under control.

Yogurt contains bacteria that can keep your system healthy and helps in healing the canker faster. Have a cup of yogurt a day.

If the discomfort is unbearable, apply any of the topical creams that are available over the counter. However, it is advisable to consult your physician before using any.

Just used a tea bag? Don't throw it away yet. Use it to cover the sore. The tannin in it will help dry up the sore.

Make room for salads in your diet. Include plenty of raw onions It contains sulphur that has healing properties.

Do not use your toothbrush for more than a month. Since cavities tend to build up, it can aggravate the condition.
Include in your diet, yogurt and other soured products like buttermilk and cottage cheese.
Do not eat fish or meat. It increases the body's acidity and slows down the healing process.
Ask your doctor for OTC medications for the pain.
Take vitamin and mineral supplements, either in pill form or include these in your diet.
If your ulcer does not heal within a week, consult your dentist

Wat can one do to protect yourself from becoming dark when outside?

Asked by Shelly in Beauty & Fashion at   8:02 AM on May 21, 2008

Vidya Anand's Answer

Remember to hydrate yourself well with enough water and juices.
Apply a sunscreen half an hour before stepping out. Since ours is a tropical climate, the humidity can cause you to sweat and wash out the sunscreen. A half an hour period will allow the sunscreen to be absorbed by the skin properly and will be more effective.
Apply it in the thickness as mentioned on the product label. Applying it in a minute portion is not sufficient to save your skin from tanning. For example, if you were to use only a small portion of SPF 15 sunscreen, then it will give you the protection of 7.5 SPF, which is half of it.
Do not forget to wear a cap and loose fitting, full sleeved cotton clothes.
Under the Sun

While out in the sun, remember to stand under a shade. Never stand directly facing the sunlight.
If you happen to stay out longer, remember to reapply the sunscreen every three hours.
Within Cool Confines

Once you are inside your house or office, wash your face with a mild face wash and reapply the sunscreen.
Do not use a strong soap that contains harsh chemicals.
If sunscreen is not handy, any soothing lotion will do.

Certain medications such as antibiotics used to treat acne or birth control pills can increase your sun sensitivity. If you are on any such medication, use plenty of sunscreen or you could even get sun burnt.
There are various sunscreen products available in the market. But which one is best suited for you?

The SPF number on a sunscreen shows the level of protection it gives. "SPF values range from two to sixty. However, for the Indian skin type, an SPF 15 is more than enough. It will give you 95 % protection from the UV rays

Asked by sweety in Personal Health at   7:59 PM on May 10, 2008

Vidya Anand's Answer

Your hair exhibits what you eat. If you eat correctly and drink enough water, 80 percent of the problem is solved.

Here are some good hair foods you can include in your daily diet:

Palak, paneer, milk, almonds, Chinese cabbage, soyabean, kabuli chana and bajra.

Hair is primarily made up of proteins. Thus, a primary necessity for good looking hair is an adequate protein intake.
Fat helps in making the hair look lustrous. Sebum secreted form the sebaceous glands gives hair its shine.
Vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and amino acids are necessary for cell balance. Therefore they affect the cells responsible for hair growth.
Vitamin E and C, or beta-carotene, specifically act as anti-oxidants, protecting your hair from free radicals. They help your hair to withstand pollution, chemicals, cold, sun, stress and medication.
Oil your hair three times a week.
Oil can be kept minimum for four hours and maximum for 24 hours.
Wash your hair if required daily and if not then three times a day with shampoo.
Never keep your hair wet.
Never brush your hair when wet.
Towel drying is the best way to dry your hair.
Have preferably seven hours of sleep daily.

when and how to use birth control pills?

Asked by tom sammer in Pregnancy at   10:31 AM on May 14, 2008

Vidya Anand's Answer

Oral Contraceptive Pills are hormone supplements that trick the pituitary gland into believing you're pregnant, which stops the ovaries from releasing the egg each month (ovulation).

They have a 99 per cent success rate if you take it at the same time, everyday.

Before you start with an OCP, visit your gynaecologist for a through check-up.

OCPs come in packs of 21 and 28 (everyday pack) pills. Start on the first day of your periods and take one pill everyday for the next 21 or 28 days - depending on the pack you buy.

When taking the 21-pills pack, remember to stop the pills after 21 days. Wait till you're done with your periods, before you start with a new pack.

If you're the forgetful kind, then the 28-pills pack is for you. It contains 21 hormone pills and 7 placebos. You need to them continuously and don't have to remember when to stop.

Always take the pill on a full stomach - ideally, after breakfast or lunch.

Everyone misses a pill or two sometimes. If you remember the pill after your usual time, simply take it as soon as possible. The next day, take it at the same time that you usually do.

If you miss than two pills in a row, continue with them as usual. However, use an external contraceptive like a condom, for a few days after that.

Since every woman's body reacts differently to OCPs, you may or may not experience side effects. But, it's necessary to consult with a gynaecologist before taking them.

Be open about any specific medical conditions that you may have. Inform your doctor if;

You have thromboembolic disorder (the tendency to form blood clots).
You or a family member has a history of cancer related to the reproductive organs, including the breasts.
You or someone in your family has a history of heart attacks, coronary heart diseases, angina (severe chest pain) or kidney failure.
You are a smoker above the age of 35.
You suffer from hypertension (BP) or diabetes.
You are a nursing mother.
What are the possible side effects?

When you're on Oral Contraceptive Pills, it's perfectly normal to experience:

Headaches initially
Occasional nausea
Occasional spotting (mid-cycle)
Tenderness of the breasts
Slight weight gain
However, stop your OCP if;

You get migraine attacks after you start taking them.
You experience excessive flow during your monthly period.
Your weight fluctuates often.
You experience severe bouts of depression and mood swings that affect your daily activities.
You observe any other unusual symptoms like pain in lower abdomen, hot flashes, pain while urinating.
In any case, inform your gynaecologist immediately about any discomfort you experience after starting an OCP.

OCPs come in two types:

The Combination Pill
Commonly referred to as 'the Pill', the Combination Pill contains two artificially produced female hormones - i.e.: Oestrogen and Progestin.

The Mini Pill
This variety of OCPs contain only Progestin. It thereby avoids some side effects of the combination pill, but not all of them.
Why consider OCPs as my method of birth control?

If taken with proper consultation, OCPs free you from all birth control worries. They give you the freedom to decide.

Also, OCPs are known to have some positive side effects. They;

Reduce menstrual pain and heavy flow during periods.
Make your menstrual cycle more regular and predictable.
Help with severe acne problems. Some doctors prescribe OCPs for complicated acne cases.
However, medical experts are still debating on the accuracy of the positive effects.

Now that you know the perks and pitfalls, you can decide if OCPs are the birth control option for you. Again, it is always best to visit your gynaecologist for a check-up first.

Asked by swati lohani in Personal Health at   3:25 PM on May 15, 2008

Vidya Anand's Answer

You may go through a temporary period of infertility after going off contraception. On an average you will be infertile for a maximum of two to three months. But once your menstrual cycle becomes normal, you can think about conceiving.

It is better to wait until you have gone through two to three menstrual cycles before trying to conceive.
