is there any connection for mental disorders with full moon day?

Asked by tvdurairajan in Personal Health at   11:41 PM on April 24, 2008

Rekha's Answer

Belief that the full moon is associated with psychiatric disturbance persists despite 50 years research showing no association. This article traces the historical roots of belief in the power of the moon to cause disorders the mind, especially insanity and epilepsy. Putative mechanisms of lunar action are critiqued. It is proposed that modern findings showing lack of lunar effect can be reconciled with pre-modern beliefs in the moon’s power through a mechanism of sleep deprivation. Prior to the advent of modern lighting the moon was a significant source of nocturnal illumination that affected sleep–wake cycle, tending to cause sleep deprivation around the time of full moon. This partial sleep deprivation would have been sufficient to induce mania/hypomania in susceptible bipolar patients and seizures in patients with seizure disorders. The advent of modern lighting attenuated this lunar effect, especially in modern urban areas, where most 20th century studies of lunar effects on the mind have been conducted. The hypothesis presented in this article is open to empirical validation or falsification. Potential tests for the sleep-deprivation hypothesis of lunar action are discussed.

which is the correct time for sex education for teens?

Asked by Jubin Raj in Personal Health at   10:20 AM on April 21, 2008

Rekha's Answer

Teenagers who have had formal sex education are more likely to delay sexual intercourse until after they turn 15, according to a study published Wednesday in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

The study was carried out by researchers at the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention.

Researchers found that teenage boys who had sex education in school were 71 percent less likely to have intercourse before age 15, and girls who had formal sex education were 59 percent less likely to have sex before age 15.

"Sex education seems to be working," Trisha Mueller, an epidemiologist with the CDC who led the study, told the reporters. "It seems to be especially effective for populations that are usually at high risk."

Sex education also increased the likelihood that teen boys would use contraceptives the first time they had sex, according to the study.

Researchers analyzed responses from 2,019 teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19 to the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth and concluded that formal sex education also seems to lead to safer sex.

The study said boys who had received sex education were almost three times more likely to use birth control the first time they had sex, but no such associations were found among girls.

"Unlike many previous studies, our results suggest that sex education before first sex protects youth from engaging in sexual intercourse at an early age," said researchers in the study.

what are the best ayurveda/homeopathic medicines for heart patients, any other alternative medicines

Asked by pawan bhatia in Personal Health at   12:43 AM on March 28, 2008

Rekha's Answer

Cardiac problems arise mainly due to improper diet and stressful life styles. " These lead to thickening of arteries (dhamani praticaya) or hardening of arteries (dhamani kathinaya) resulting in angio-obstruction (vata dosa) and angina (ruja). "
High blood pressure that hammers the arterial walls roughens them and causes the arterial wall to thicken. fatty cholesterol particles get deposited under the inner lining of the arteries (i.e. atherosclerosis). The higher the pressure more the deposits will occur. Subsequently these deposits become calcified due to fibrous growth and involved arteries lose their elasticity. It prevents blood from flowing easily and may lead to clotting. The clot formation can suddenly choke off the blood supply and lead to a heart attack, stroke or kidney failure.

Which is the best way to eliminate negative thoughts from mind apart from Yoga/ meditation?

Asked by Jai20 P in Personal Health at   1:12 PM on April 08, 2008

Rekha's Answer

A vital step in this process is the immediate replacement of all negative thoughts by the positive ones. The shorter the interval between the disinfecting and the replacing stage, the better it is. Longer intervals between these two events weaken the impact of the positive thoughts. Our success and happiness depend on identifying our goals precisely and chasing them effectively, both of which, in turn, depend on how well we manage our thoughts. The quality of our thoughts decides the quality of the outcomes we land up with. Thoughts have the power to materialize themselves because they are instrumental in channeling energy towards the physical or mental condition they are about.

External situations and the remarks of others can harm us through our thoughts—but only to the extent our thoughts allow them to. So think positive. Talk positive. Read positive quotable quotes of great people. Surround yourself with posters and cards bearing positive messages. Keep them on your table. Hang them on the walls. Paste them near the bathroom mirror and on the doors. Stick them on your watchstrap. Keep them on the refrigerator. Have them on the dashboard of the car. Slip them under the glass of the table in front of you. Slide them in the inner side of the briefcase you carry. Find other suitable places where you are bound to look at them every day.

Remember that these messages will stale with prolonged use. So keep changing their position and contents. Do not let the momentum of these thoughts get weaker.

Use them appropriately in response to specific negative thoughts. The replacing thought must be positive in every sense. Apart from being inspiring and assuring, it should also be suggestive. For example, if you confront a negative thought, "I can never succeed", it will not suffice if you replace it with "Sun! Attack! I can succeed". This kind of replacement may not be effective, for it sounds like wishful thinking and lacks assurance, depth and penetrating certainty. It is better to break your replacing thought down into more definite and specific steps or instructions.

The replacing thought in this case may be: "I can succeed. By earlier failures I have become rich in experience and have come to know specific areas that require special attention. I will jot them down and systematically think of the ways in which I can improve. I shall plan. And then stick to it. There is absolutely no reason why I should not succeed. I will assess, plan, execute, monitor, modify and carryon with the plan, and finally succeed. In fact, I think that success has already been achieved and only time separates my thought of success and its transformation into reality. I am committing myself to all that is required to achieve success. I am a river that knows no obstacles. I shall find my way anyhow—and if there is none I shall make one."

whit is olive oil this is fish oil?

Asked by vijay mag in Personal Health at   8:24 PM on April 07, 2008

Rekha's Answer

In my opinion, other than drinking more water and eating more fresh raw green vegetables, the most important addition to the diet to fight and prevent disease and live longer is fish oil. More specifically, fish oil in the summer months and cod liver oil in the winter months when we can't spend as much time outdoors.
Meanwhile, our intake of Omega-6 fats, another fat found in soy, corn, sunflower and other oils, is much too high.
cod liver oil and fish oil

Experts looking at the dietary ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids suggest that in early human history the ratio was about 1:1, however the ratio is around 20:1 to 50:1! Generally our diet contains far too much omega 6 fats. For most of us, this means greatly reducing the omega-6 fatty acids we consume and increasing the amount of omega-3 fatty acids.

I strongly recommend you avoid corn, sunflower, soy, safflower, canola, or products which contain these oils. This means no hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats, no margarine, no shortening, no vegetable oil. These oils are full of omega-6 fats and will only worsen your omega 6/omega 3 ratio. You want to emphasize high quality extra virgin olive oil, organic butter, coconut oil and avocados.

You don’t need to be concerned with the quantity of fat in your diet, rather you need to be concerned with the TYPE - and saturated fat is not the enemy. Saturated fats, found mostly in animal products like butter, cheese and fatty meats, are not as dangerous as you may believe. Saturated fats offer a number of health benefits and play many important roles in the body. Some vegetable oils (coconut and palm) also contain saturated fat. Coconut oil is a particularly healthy choice.

Trans-fatty acids, formed through a process called "hydrogenation", are found in processed foods and fried foods. Trans-fatty acids are much worse for you than saturated fats. Not only can they raise LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and lower HDL (good) cholesterol, but they have also been linked to heart disease.

it was my frist period, i dont know wat shud i do? can anybody tell me wat shud i do? plzzzzzz help me out

Asked by rupa agarwal in Personal Health at   8:31 PM on March 25, 2008

Rekha's Answer

You have two small, grape-shaped ovaries inside of your belly on either side of your uterus (where a baby develops). Ovaries are filled with hundreds of thousands of eggs and they are the organs that allow you to have children. You are born with ovaries. When you reach puberty and you are becoming a woman, your ovaries ripen the eggs and release one each month. Your pituitary gland in your brain releases chemical messengers, called gonadotropins, that "tell" your ovaries to release a mature egg once a month. The egg then travels towards the uterus. If the egg is not fertilized by a sperm, then two weeks later, the thick, bloody lining (called the endometrium) that builds up in your uterus between periods, passes out of your body through your vagina. This flow, which comes out as blood, is your menstrual period. The whole process is called menstruation, and it will begin when your body is ready.

What does my menstrual period feel like?

Your menstrual period feels like liquid flowing slowly, with starts and stops, out of your vagina. And this is exactly what happens during your menstrual period. Blood flows slowly out of your vagina. Although it may seem like a lot of blood, only a small amount is really released at a time. It is normal to see small clots of blood on the toilet paper when you urinate.
