Because in vikunt he was one of the dwarabalak. Due to the curse of durvasa rishi he is taking birth in earth. For getting rid of the birth the solution suggested by the rishi - he has to die in the hands of Vishnu. Accordingly he is born as Ravan and Vishnu as Lord Rama. For getting relief from birth of earth, he was called in the hands of Lord Rama.
