If you enjoy physical challenges and you are an adventure tour freak, Uttaranchal is the place for you. One of the most popular states of India, Uttaranchal is located in the hilly terrains of Himalayan Mountains. Tibet, Nepal, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh borders the state of Uttaranchal. Travel to any part of Uttaranchal and you will be served with a long menu of adventure activities. The domain of Himalayan Mountains makes it most apt for all types of adventure activities. The lofty Himalayas, the rugged terrains, the impenetrable forest covers and the challenging rivers offer endless opportunities for the adventure seekers. Explore the Himalayas while you ski on its snow-clad mountain range, trek in its forests or climb up the hill tops of the majestic mountain ranges. If that's not enough, raft through the rivers of Uttaranchal, which has some very difficult challenges in its stores. Or be a wildlife lover and go for the trips to the wildlife sanctuary and the national parks of Uttaranchal.

There is an Aero sports club in Dehradun, the capital city of Uttaranchal. The club is managed by Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN). GMVN facilitates the aero sports in the valley of Dehradun. The equipment's for parasailing and paragliding activities are made available by GMVN. The club also trains the beginners. They have certified trainers and instructors who guide the tourists who come for the aero sports. Skiing is also a favourite sport in Uttaranchal during the winter time, i.e., December to March. Some of the skiing sites are Alui, Dayara Bugyal, Mundali and Munsyari. Alui is a hot destination for the ski lovers, be it a beginner or an experienced skier. The 3 km stretch has long slopes for skiing. The view of Himalayan range also makes it a memorable trip.

The excellent ski slopes of Dayara Bugyal are spread over an area of 28 sq. kms. The panoramic view of the Himalayas from here is breathtaking. Mountaineering can be enjoyed around the Gangotri Glacier and the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. The peaks of varying heights, between 6500-7000 m, offers quite a thrilling adventure. Nanda Devi is 7601 m high while Kamet and Abhigaman are over 7000 m high. For Trekking lovers, Pithoragarh, also called 'Mini Kashmir', is an ideal place. Some of the exciting treks from here are 'Pithorgarh-Parwati Lake - Chota Kailash-Sinla Pass trek' and the 'Munsyari-Martoli-Milam-Ralam glacier trek'. The Corbett National Park and the Nanda Devi National Park provide the view of the wildlife in there natural shelter. The Corbett National Park is home to Tigers, and is India's first national park, which is most ideal for the people who are very keen in wildlife adventure tours. The Sport of river rafting is done mainly in the upper part of the streams of river Ganga, Yamuna, Alaknanda and Bhagirathi. Taken up during October to May, river rafting in Uttaranchal can be very tough as the water passes through the narrow passages and deep inclinations.

In all, Uttaranchal offers all sort of adventure to its adventure loving tourists.

India – the land to travel to, a haven of tourism delights, a civilization to tour through. Tourists come to India for its wealth of sights, cultural exuberance, diversity of terrain and in search of that special something, an extra punch that only India promises and delivers. Teeming with over a billion people who voice over a million concerns in fifteen hundred different languages, India is where people live with variety, thrive on diversity and are too familiar with largeness to let it boggle them. Mud huts and mansions face off across city streets. Lurid luxury and limp living are inhabitants of the same lane.
Kathakali Dancer, India

From the smoky mangroves of the Sunderbans to the steaming Thar Desert, sizzling cities like Mumbai and Delhi to the scintillating villages of Khajuraho and Hampi, from the heights of the Himalayas to the deep blue waters around the Andamans, India is a travel haven – a tour package that frustrates and delights, as demanding as it is rewarding.

It demands that the traveller be prepared for its own strange forms of tourism offerings - the crowds at Pushkar, for pushy mendicants at Haridwar, for high commercialism at spiritual retreats. But equally, it means that he be prepared for an overwhelming warmth in the people, ease of conversation, and to be stunned into speechlessness by the beauty, sometimes the manmade and often the natural.
Taj Mahal, Agra, India But what exactly is it that gets two and a half million people to pack their bags, book their tickets, buy industrial size cans of suntan lotion and enough toilet paper to supply the entire population of Liechtenstein for a month, and wing their way to India? Given that this is the land of the Taj, granted too that tea, tobacco, tempestuous democracy and terrific travel are a great combination but surely that's not reason enough.
There must be more because between truisms and half-truths, India has inspired more than any one place's fair share of travel lore. And, perhaps that's what it is - the legends of India - that's what inspires people from far and near to travel here, to sort out for themselves what's true and what's just a whole lot of tourism pamphlet hype.

If that's what you're going to be doing, here's a bit of India tourism mantra to help you on your way: expect nothing and everything will be yours.

where is taaj mahal?

Asked by sumi sharma in Travel at   12:08 PM on February 28, 2008

Naveen's Answer

Agra, once the capital of the Mughal Empire during the 16th and early 18th centuries, is one and a half hours by express train from New Delhi. Tourists from all over the world visit Agra not to see the ruins of the red sandstone fortress built by the Mughal emperors but to make a pilgrimage to Taj Mahal, India’s most famous architectural wonder, in a land where magnificent temples and edificies abound to remind visitors about the rich civilization of a country that is slowly but surely lifting itself into an industrialized society.

The postcard picture of Taj Mahal does not adequately convey the legend, the poetry and the romance that shroud what Rabindranath Tagore calls "a teardrop on the cheek of time". Taj Mahal means "Crown Palace" and is in fact the most well preserved and architecturally beautiful tomb in the world. It is best described by the English poet, Sir Edwin Arnold, as "Not a piece of architecture, as other buildings are, but the proud passions of an emperor’s love wrought in living stones." It is a celebration of woman built in marble and that’s the way to appreciate it.

Mumtaz MahalShah JahanTaj Mahal stands on the bank of River Yamuna, which otherwise serves as a wide moat defending the Great Red Fort of Agra, the center of the Mughal emperors until they moved their capital to Delhi in 1637. It was built by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan in 1631 in memory of his second wife, Mumtaz Mahal, a Muslim Persian princess. She died while accompanying her husband in Burhanpur in a campaign to crush a rebellion after giving birth to their 14th child. The death so crushed the emperor that all his hair and beard were said to have grown snow white in a few months.

When Mumtaz Mahal was still alive, she extracted four promises from the emperor: first, that he build the Taj; second, that he should marry again; third, that he be kind to their children; and fourth, that he visit the tomb on her death anniversary. He kept the first and second promises. Construction began in 1631 and was completed in 22 years. Twenty thousand people were deployed to work on it. The material was brought in from all over India and central Asia and it took a fleet of 1000 elephants to transport it to the site. It was designed by the Iranian architect Ustad Isa and it is best appreciated when the architecture and its adornments are linked to the passion that inspired it. It is a "symbol of eternal love".

The Taj rises on a high red sandstone base topped by a huge white marble terrace on which rests the famous dome flanked by four tapering minarets. Within the dome lies the jewel-inlaid cenotaph of the queen. So exquisite is the workmanship that the Taj has been described as "having been designed by giants and finished by jewellers". The only asymmetrical object in the Taj is the casket of the emperor which was built beside the queen’s as an afterthought. The emperor was deposed by his son and imprisoned in the Great Red Fort for eight years but was buried in the Taj. During his imprisonment, he had a view of the Taj.

As a tribute to a beautiful woman and as a monument for enduring love, the Taj reveals its subtleties when one visits it without being in a hurry. The rectangular base of Taj is in itself symbolic of the different sides from which to view a beautiful woman. The main gate is like a veil to a woman’s face which should be lifted delicately, gently and without haste on the wedding night. In indian tradition the veil is lifted gently to reveal the beauty of the bride. As one stands inside the main gate of Taj, his eyes are directed to an arch which frames the Taj.

The dome is made of white marble, but the tomb is set against the plain across the river and it is this background that works its magic of colours that, through their reflection, change the view of the Taj. The colours change at different hours of the day and during
