sour heels : my heals hurt, i can not walk without good shoes, please tell me a cure and if any experience in this?

Asked by sumeet s in Personal Health at   10:31 AM on April 18, 2008

deepa iyer's Answer

Sore heels can flare up when the plantar fascia ligament that stretches from the heel to the ball of the foot – which also supports the arch – becomes inflamed. Calcium deposits may eventually form on the heel bone, resulting in mild to serious heel pain when applying pressure on the foot.

Heel spurs and a sore heel typically occur in people with flat feet. As the arch starts to collapse, the band of ligament and the muscle in the bottom of the foot absorbs the impact of pressure from standing or walking. Eventually, it stretches beyond its limits, leading to possible muscle tears and bone spurs. People with flat feet should make an effort to wear support shoes that offer stability through the arch.

Using insoles that support the arch and reduce tension on the ligament.

Making use of a sore heel cushion or slight heel lift to relieve pressure and reduce inflammation of the plantar at its attachment to the heel bone.

Correcting leg length discrepancy via an adjustable heel lift.

Using a heel cup to add extra shock absorption to shoes, thus reducing pressure on heels.

Giving the afflicted area an ice massage to reduce inflammation and relieve tension.

Stretching calf muscle to reduce tightness.

Maintaining length of the tight calf muscle with the use of a night splint.

why we yawn??

Asked by ankur g in Personal Health at   11:34 PM on April 11, 2008

deepa iyer's Answer

THE TRUTH IS that we don’t completely understand why people, or animals for that matter, yawn.

It’s widely assumed that yawning occurs because we are tired or bored or because we see someone else doing it, but there isn’t any hard evidence to support these beliefs.

Scientists do not purport to know all of the biological mechanisms of the yawn, but tend to agree that a yawn is an involuntary respiratory reflex, which regulates the carbon dioxide and oxygen levels in the blood.

Technically, a yawn is the reflex opening of the mouth followed by the deep inhalation and slow exhalation of oxygen.

The very act of yawning is but one of a number of involuntary reflexes controlled by the spinal and nerve centers.

Scientists speculate that the onset of a yawn is triggered either by fatigue, or by sheer boredom as, at those times, breathing is shallow, and little oxygen is carried to the lungs by the oxygen-toting cardiovascular system.

When one yawns, his or her alertness is heightened, as the sudden intake of oxygen increases the heart rate, rids the lungs and the bloodstream of the carbon dioxide buildup, and forces oxygen through blood vessels in the brain, while restoring normal breathing and ventilating the lungs.

This quite plausible theory of yawning falls short of explaining many aspects of yawning. Scientists explain away the "contagious" nature of yawning, that is when one person's yawn triggers another nearby to yawn, as due to the power of suggestion, but are at a loss when attempting to explain why yawning occurs excessively in patients with lower brainstem damage or with multiple sclerosis.

Other unlocked mysteries include why fetuses in the womb yawn, when it is a well-known fact that they do not intake oxygen into their lungs until after live birth, or why individuals with high concentrations of oxygen in their blood streams yawn.

Until these questions are answered, do not assume that a person who yawns in your presence is bored with what you are saying, or suffers from exhaustion. Simply be pleased that he or she is not bored to death.

what is the medicine available for diabitis insipidus in ayurveda and where

Asked by mahabal cn in Personal Health at   3:06 PM on April 08, 2008

deepa iyer's Answer

The most significant indication of diabetes insipidus is persistent high urine output regardless of fluid intake while the indication of diabetes mellitus is an excessive amount of sugar in the blood. The JIVA Diatrin Tablet is highly active against Diabetes and contains an ayurvedic combination of diuretic herbs like the leaves of the jamun fruit and the bark of the Udumber. All the leaves and roots including those of the gudmar and fruits like amla and jamun are collected, finely sorted and then ground into powder, which is then made into small tablets. The tablet alleviates the aggravated tridosha and increases the general strength of the body besides being effective in Diabetes Mellitus and Insipidus and other urinary system related disorders.

redchillies how good or how bad for health, please define in detail

Asked by pawan bhatia in Personal Health at   9:39 PM on March 25, 2008

deepa iyer's Answer

Apart from making you happy, chillies have given much to medical science. Chillies are high in vitamin C (about twice that of citrus fruits). Dried chillis are very high in vitamin A, and red chillies are a great source of b-carotene. Chillies also have antibacterial qualities, and contain high levels of bioflavinoids, anti-oxidants most common in apple juice.
Chilli soothes the digestive tract and stimulates the flow of stomach secretions and saliva. These secretions contain substances that help digest food. Chilli is the greatest herbal aid to circulation and can be used on a regular basis. Dr. Richard Schulze, the medical herbalist, says that "If you master only one herb in your life, master the chilli pepper. It is more powerful than any other."
Capsaicum:
· improves digestion by stimulating stomach secretions
· lowers triglycerides
· triggers the release of the body's natural painkillers, the endorphins
· unclogs stuffy noses by irritating mucus membranes
· may reduce high blood pressure
· may protect against some forms of cancer
Because of its vitamin C and beta-carotene content, it helps improve eyesight; and because of its alkaloid component, capsaicin, and other essential oils, chilli pepper is considered a good stimulant for the release of digestive enzymes, tone-up of the nervous system, and relief of pain and inflammations.
Capsaicum improves the ratio of HDL cholesterol which has a protective effect on LDL cholesterol, thus reducing the risk of heart disease. Capsicum also increases the liver enzymes responsible for fat metabolism and has a thermogenic effect on weight gain.

suggest a balance diet to reduce weight within very short time.

Asked by mrittika in Personal Health at   6:15 PM on March 24, 2008

deepa iyer's Answer

Fruits and green vegetables are low calorie foods, so over weight persons should use these more frequently.

One should avoid intake of too much salt. Salt may be a factor for increasing the body weight.

Milk products like cheese, butter should be avoided because these are rich in fat. Meat and non-vegetarian foods should also be avoided.

Spices like dry ginger, cinnamon, black pepper etc. are good for loosing weight and can be used in a number of ways.

Rice and potato which contain a lot of carbohydrates should be avoided among cereals wheat is good.

Vegetables like bitter gourd (Karela), and bitter variety of drumstick are useful for loosing weight.

Taking of honey is an excellent home remedy for obesity. It mobilizes the extra deposited fat in the body and puts it into circulation, which is utilized as energy for normal functions. One should start with small quantity of about 10 GMs. or a tablespoonful to be taken with hot water. It is good to take it in early morning. A teaspoonful of fresh lemon juice may also be added.

Fasting on honey and lime juice is highly beneficial in the treatment of obesity without the loss of energy and appetite. In this mode of treatment, one teaspoonful of fresh honey should be mixed with a juice of half a lime in a glass of lukewarm water. It can be taken several times in a day at regular intervals.

Cabbage is considered to be an effective remedy for loosing weight. This vegetable inhibits the conversion of sugar and other carbohydrates into fat. Hence, it is of great value in weight reduction. It can be taken raw or cooked.

Exercise is an important part of weight reduction plan. It helps to use up calories stored in body as fat. In addition, it also relieves tension and tones up the muscles of the body. Walking is the best exercise to begin with and may be followed by running, swimming, rowing.

Lime juice is excellent for weight reduction. Juice of a lime mixed in a glass of warm water and sweetened with honey should be taken every morning on an empty stomach.

Measure the portions of your food every meal and make sure that the portions are small. For example one portion of rice should not be more than the quantity which can fit in your fist. Smaller meals at a regular interval of 4 to 5 hours will keep your metabolism high and prevent your body from converting the food you intake into fat. You must also include regular exercise in your daily routine to help enhance weight reduction.

my age is 23 ...my height is 6 feet and slightly above...i couldnt improve my body weight even i eat well..i am so lean.can anybody suggest the ways to improve

Asked by vijay G in Personal Health at   7:38 PM on March 31, 2008

deepa iyer's Answer

Let's start with metabolic rate. A person's basal metabolism represents the minimum energy expended to keep a resting, awake, body alive. The energy used in basal metabolism depends primarily on lean body mass. Other factors that influence your basal metabolism include: the amount of body surface (the greater the area, the greater the heat loss); gender (males average higher energy rates because of greater lean body mass); body temperature; thyroid hormone levels (higher levels increase metabolic rate); aspects of nervous system activity; age (metabolic rate falls as we age); nutritional state (eating less slows metabolic rate); pregnancy (metabolic rate increases); caffeine and tobacco use (metabolic rate increases).

About being underweight, sometimes being too thin requires medical intervention. A physician can rule out hormonal imbalances, depression, and other hidden diseases such as anorexia or bulimia. Risks associated with being too skinny include complications in surgery and slow recovery after illnesses.

You seem to be on the right track in terms of what you can do yourself to gain weight. The reason people suggest weight lifting is because it has a tendency to add muscle mass--pure weight, more so than other sports activities, which add some muscle at the same time as one is also burning off many calories. As far as food choices, try gradually increasing your consumption of energy-dense foods, especially those higher in vegetable fats. Italian cheeses, nuts, and granola are good kcalorie sources with low saturated fat content (read the label to make sure the product is high in mostly unsaturated fat). Dried fruit and bananas provide other high kcalorie fruit choices. If eaten at the end of a meal, they don't cause early satiety. Try replacing foods such as diet sodas with good energy sources, such as fruit juice.
