Statisticians help to design surveys and experiments. They also help tp collect, analyze, and interpret numerical data and key ratios and probabilities. They are equally employed in the private and public sector. To give an example, some statisticians may collect data to learn how safe new products are. This must be done before the product can be sold.
Statisticians often use samples to collect and interpret numerical information. A sample provides, through sampling of data, information about a small group within a much larger group. Statisticians interpret their learning about the small group and apply it to the larger group.
Statisticians decide where and how to gather the data. They choose the sample size. They decide on the type of survey. They tell workers who gather the data how to do their job. They process the collected data and reach conclusions about the data. They do this with the help of computer software or other statisticl methods.
Statisticians give advice to people, set up surveys or gather data, set up experiments and do fieldwork. Some teach and do research too. Government economists expect job growth in statistics to be as fast as the average for all careers through 2016.
A degree in statistics should be a plus when you’re looking for work, even if the job you find does not have the title of statistician. Many graduates of statistics programs find work analyzing the data of researchers in fields as varied as economics and psychology.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, statisticians earned an average of $72,150 in 2007.
According to a 2005 survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, starting salary offers for graduates with bachelor's degrees in math and statistics averaged $43,448 a year.
