Define Backbone

Asked by Sid in Computers & Technology at   5:23 PM on January 17, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

The part of a network that handles the major traffic. It employs the highest-speed transmission paths in the network and may also run the longest distances. Smaller networks are attached to the backbone, and networks that directly connect to the end user or customer are called "access networks."

A backbone can span a geographic area of any size from a single building to an office complex to an entire country. Or, it can be as small as a backplane in a single cabinet.

Define BarCode

Asked by Sid in Computers & Technology at   5:25 PM on January 17, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

The printed code used for recognition by a bar code scanner (reader). Traditional one-dimensional bar codes use the bar's width to encode just a product or account number. Two-dimensional bar codes, such as PDF417, MaxiCode and DataMatrix, are scanned horizontally and vertically and hold considerably more data. PDF417 is widely used for general purposes. MaxiCode is used for high-speed sortation, and DataMatrix is used for marking small parts. See bar code scanner, UPC, point of sale, AIM and PDF417. Contrast with RFID.
One-Dimensional Bar Code
This 1-D bar code is widely used as the universal product code (UPC) on millions of consumer items.

How do dual core processors work?

Asked by shruti in Computers & Accessories at   8:10 PM on January 12, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

Dual-core chips are not just for advanced applications; rather, everyday tasks can take advantage of two simultaneous processing streams. For example, routine downloads of e-mail and software updates that increasingly take place in the background no longer slow down the foreground application. Virus scans and backup programs can be initiated without interfering with the primary task.

CPUs with two or more cores are expected to gain significant momentum in the 2007-2010 time frame, not only in servers, but in desktop and laptop computers as well.

NEURAL NETWORK null समजाओ

Asked by Sameep Shah in Computers & Technology at   3:02 PM on January 17, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

Computer systems which deal with data by the use of simple processors, whose output is then entered into a second layer of processors, and so on through several layers. These networks can throw up pragmatic, rather than theory-based, models, thus producing new insights; for example, neural networks have been used to develop a classification of land use, based on images from remote sensors. They can work on limited data, and are flexible; new connections can be made with the input of further data.

I don't know what a bios is.?

Asked by sachin in Computers & Accessories at   8:16 PM on January 12, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

(Basic Input Output System) An essential set of routines that sets up the hardware in a PC and boots the operating system. Prior to loading the operating system, the BIOS provides basic software drivers for all peripheral technologies that are part of the PC's motherboard, including the keyboard, mouse, monitor and hard disk. The drivers enable the user to edit configuration settings and allow the hardware to access the hard disk, optical disk or floppy disk to obtain the operating system.

After the operating system is loaded, more elaborate drivers are typically loaded, which replace the BIOS routines used to boot the system. The BIOS also supports internal services such as the real time clock (time and date).
