What does www mean?

Asked by Shampa in Computers & Technology at   12:16 AM on January 17, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

The World Wide Web ("WWW" or simply the "Web") is a global, read-write information space. Text documents, images, multimedia and many other items of information, referred to as resources, are identified by short, unique, global identifiers called Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) so that each can be found, accessed and cross-referenced in the simplest possible way.

The term is often mistakenly used as a synonym for the Internet itself, but the Web is actually something that is available via the Internet, just like e-mail and many other Internet services.

What are templates?

Asked by Shampa in Computers & Technology at   12:13 AM on January 17, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

"Templates" can have different meanings, depending on the application of a "template". Normally, as far as computer usage goes, templates are considered as files (or "skeleton" documents) to help computer users to create a new file (or document) based on the information contained in the generic or skeleton file.

For example, if you use a word processor, you can create a letterhead for the company you work for, with only company information contained in it, and with no "body text". When this document is saved as a template, you can easily create a company letter, by using the letterhead template. When you create the new document, you can base the new document on the template, resulting in a document with a letterhead already completed, which will save you loads of time. Now you only have to fill in the text that applies to the specific document that you want to create.

Asked by Sid in Computers & Technology at   5:41 PM on January 17, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

In computers, process of starting up a computer. The term boot derives from the idea that the computer has to pull itself up by its bootstraps, that is, load into memory a small program that enables it to load larger programs. There are two types of booting operations. One is cold boot, which is the operation of booting a computer that has been completely shut down. The other is warm boot, which is a restarting operation in which some of the needed programs are already in memory. In the case of the IBM PC, for example, the warm boot is done by pressing ctr, alt, and del keys simultaneously.
