What is DNS? explain in brief

Asked by Yogesh in Computers & Technology at   3:19 PM on January 19, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

(Domain Name System) A system for converting host names and domain names into IP addresses on the Internet or on local networks that use the TCP/IP protocol. For example, when a Web site address is given to the DNS either by typing a URL in a browser or behind the scenes from one application to another, DNS servers return the IP address of the server associated with that name.

In this hypothetical example, WWW.COMPANY.COM would be converted into the IP address 204.0.8.51. Without DNS, you would have to type the four numbers and dots into your browser to retrieve the Web site, which of course, you can do. Try finding the IP of a favorite Web site and type in the dotted number instead of the domain name!

Define Abstract Class

Asked by Sid in Computers & Technology at   5:14 PM on January 16, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

Also called an "abstract superclass," in object technology, it is a class created as a master structure. No objects of an abstract class are created, rather subclasses of the abstract class are defined with their own variations, and the subclasses are used to create the actual objects.

Define Application

Asked by Sid in Computers & Technology at   5:50 PM on January 16, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

(1) A set of files that make up software for the user. The terms "application" and "application program" are synonymous; however, there could be a technical difference if both terms are used in the same conversation. In that case, "application" would refer to the complete set of files that have to be installed (executables, configuration files, ancillary data files, etc.), whereas the "application program" would refer to just one executable file. See application program.

(2) A specific use of the computer, such as for payroll, inventory and billing. For a list of major application software categories.
