Define VIRUS

Asked by vizag99999 in Computers & Technology at   7:06 PM on January 21, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

Software used to infect a computer. After the virus code is written, it is buried within an existing program. Once that program is executed, the virus code is activated and attaches copies of itself to other programs in the system. Infected programs copy the virus to other programs.

The effect of the virus may be a simple prank that pops up a message on screen out of the blue, or it may destroy programs and data right away or on a certain date. It can lay dormant and do its damage once a year. For example, the Michelangelo virus contaminates the machine on Michelangelo's birthday.

What are tachyons?

Asked by Ullas P in Computers & Technology at   11:15 AM on January 21, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

hypothetical elementary particle that travels only at speeds exceeding that of light. According to the theory of relativity, the speed of light is the limiting velocity for all ordinary material particles. Particles having nonzero rest mass can approach, but not reach, the speed of light, since their mass would become infinite at that speed. On the other hand, particles with zero rest mass, such as the photon, must always travel at the speed of light; they cannot be brought to rest or even slowed down. Theorists have argued that since nothing in principle prohibits the existence of a third class of particles that travel only at speeds exceeding that of light, such particles, called tachyons [Gr. tachys,=swift] may exist although no evidence for them has been found. In the terminology of the theory, the particles that travel only at the speed of light are called luxons, and those that travel at lesser speeds are called tardyons. Like the original theory of relativity, the theory of tachyons has several aspects that appear to contradict common sense but that are fully self-consistent. For example, a tachyon must have an imaginary (in the mathematical sense) rest mass, or proper mass, and it must travel faster rather than slow down when it loses energy.

what is LED?

Asked by PIYUSH in Computers & Technology at   10:51 PM on January 19, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

An LED is a Light Emitting Diode. It is a semiconductor device designed to produce a certain type, wavelength, etc. of light.

As opposed to an LCD which is a Liquid Crystal Display, does not emit light of any real intensity, although excitation methods have been developed for use in TV's, cellphones, etc. More common now than LED's. The major difference is that LED's have to have power all the time to emit. LCD's just need power to change. So, they are more energy efficient.

broad band connection

Asked by mohan in Computers & Technology at   4:22 PM on January 21, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

(1) High-speed transmission. The term commonly refers to Internet access via cable and DSL, which is as much as 400 times faster than analog dial-up. The term has always referred to a higher-speed connection, but the speed threshold varies with the times. Widely employed in companies, the 1.5 Mbps T1 line was often considered the starting point for broadband speeds, while the FCC defines broadband as a minimum upload speed of 200 Kbps.

The T1 line is no longer the coveted connection for Web surfing. Home users with cable modems experience download speeds up to four times that of T1 and more (see cable modem). For example, in 2007, Comcast offered home users a premium service of 1 Mbps upload and 16 Mbps download. Fiber-based offerings from telephone companies are even greater.

What is a lost cluster?

Asked by munna in Computers & Technology at   6:50 PM on January 21, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

Disk records that have lost their identification with a file name. This can happen if a file is not closed properly, which can sometimes occur if the computer is turned off without quitting the application first.

WHAT IS JPG FILES

Asked by REENA SINGH in Computers & Technology at   1:54 PM on January 21, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

Standard computer file format for storing graphic images in a compressed form for general use. JPEG images are compressed using a mathematical algorithm. A variety of encoding processes can be used, depending on whether the user's goal is the highest quality of image (lossless) or smallest file size (lossy). The JPEG and GIF formats are the most commonly used graphics formats on the Internet for lossy and lossless data compression, respectively.

Define Blog

Asked by Sid in Computers & Technology at   12:36 PM on January 19, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

(1) To write a blog entry. Blogs (definition #2 below) became so popular that the noun was turned into a verb; for example, "I'll blog about that subject next month."

(2) (WeBLOG) A Web site that contains dated text entries in reverse chronological order (most recent first) about a particular topic. Blogs serve many purposes from online newsletters to personal journals to "ranting and raving." They can be written by one person or a group of contributors. Entries contain commentary and links to other Web sites, and images as well as a search facility may be included. Blogs may also contain video.

Although some blogs invite feedback and comments, Internet newsgroup discussions, which started long before the Web, tend to be more question-and-answer oriented (see newsgroup).

Define Bookmarks

Asked by Sid in Computers & Technology at   12:37 PM on January 19, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

A stored location for quick retrieval at a later date. Web browsers provide bookmarks that contain the addresses (URLs) of favorite sites. Most electronic references, large text databases and help systems provide bookmarks that mark a location users want to revisit in the future.

In computers what is ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange)

Asked by Gomati in Computers & Technology at   4:06 AM on January 20, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

Ascii (American Standard Code for Information Interchange)
Computer term. The code converts a character into a binary number used by most microcomputers and information services (on-line data bases) so that different makes of microcomputers may be able to communicate with each other. ASCII is used on most microcomputers, computer terminals, and printers. ASCII codes also include control characters that information services use. Many computer books and some software programs (e.g., Borland International's Sidekick) have a table of ASCII characters. The use of ASCII also allows for data files generated by one type of program (i.e., data base management system) to be used in another type of program (i.e., spreadsheet). An example of an ASCII application follows. Data may be downloaded from an information service (e.g., Dow Jones News/Retrieval) in ASCII and then loaded into a word processing program and edited and printed out or even sent to another computer using a telecommunications program. ASCII is quite helpful in electronic mail because with MCI, for example, the accountant can upload an ASCII file as electronic mail to his clients.

Define Batch Processing

Asked by Sid in Computers & Technology at   12:39 PM on January 19, 2008

Sanket Vora's Answer

(1) Performing a particular operation automatically on a group of files all at once rather than manually opening, editing and saving one file at a time. For example, graphics software that converts a selection of images from one format to another would be a batch processing utility.

(2) Processing a group of transactions at one time. Transactions are collected and processed against the master files (master files updated) at the end of the day or some other time period.
