How to protect a folder with a password?

Asked Anonymously in Computers & Technology at   12:28 PM on November 28, 2008

Sandeep's Answer

In order to require a username and password to access part or all of a web site, you need to 1) create a password file (with appropriate read priviledges) and 2) create a confirguration file in the folder to be protected. Here are the direct instructions for the impatient: If you browse to http://www.math.mcmaster.ca/~your_u sername/folder_to_protect, you should be asked for a username and password.

Camino, Firefox, Safari, Which Browser is Best?

Asked by shivangi kap in Computers & Technology at   12:53 PM on November 28, 2008

Sandeep's Answer

With just a day to go before the WWDC and nineteen before the Second Coming, the thick fog of Apple-OCD is smothering the land. So I'm surprised it took this long for an Apple-juice-addled obsessive to compile a list of (fairly minor) UI changes made in the iPhone between its January debut and the even-slicker-than-usual ads rolled out last week.

Why can't I paste tables copied from the Safari? web browser into Fathom?

Asked by shivangi kap in Computers & Technology at   12:54 PM on November 28, 2008

Sandeep's Answer

Safari doesn't preserve the table data in a form that Fathom can import. You could try dragging from Safari to Fathom (if it's a static web page)-see online Help on how to import data from the Internet. Or use Safari's View Source command and then copy the contents of the source window and paste that into Fathom. Or use another browser that does a better job of copying table data to the clipboard. Most likely, you found your data by doing a search.

Why doesn't the encoded date (hebrew characters) redisplay properly when I change the date?

Asked by shivangi kap in Computers & Technology at   12:54 PM on November 28, 2008

Sandeep's Answer

That problem was reported on a mac running the IE 5.1 browser. I'm awaiting further information to determine if this is occuring with IE 5.1 on a pc as well. Until I figure out what the problem is, one work-around is to click the hide/redisplay button twice after each time that you change the date. Or you could switch to a mac netscape browser -- that one was been reported not to have this problem.

How can I hear the sound from the video lectures when I play them on my Mac?

Asked by shivangi kap in Computers & Technology at   12:55 PM on November 28, 2008

Sandeep's Answer

Some Windows Media files (such as the streaming video in the courses) may not play correctly on Mac OS X computers without downloading the Flip4Mac player (free) from the Microsoft web site. After downloading the free player, the course streaming video plays correctly in the Safari browser. Some video files may not play correctly on Mac OS X computers without downloading the free DivX codec from the QuickTime Components page or the DivX web site.

What is DLP® technology?

Asked by shivangi kap in Computers & Technology at   1:14 PM on November 28, 2008

Sandeep's Answer

Like digital video camcorders, DLP devices come in either one or three-chip models. One-chip DLP systems use a projection lamp to pass white light through a color wheel that sends red-green-blue colors to the DMD chip in a sequential order to create an image on-screen. Only one DMD chip is used to process the primary RGB colors. Three-chip DLP systems use a projection lamp to send white light through a prism, which creates separate red, green, and blue light beams.

This is an older problem; if you experience it, we would suggest that you try a different web browser (such as Safari, Firefox, or OmniWeb), or try again later.
