Do DVRs support HDTV or Dolby Digital?

Asked by Naveen Misra in Electronics & Gadgets at   4:15 PM on February 03, 2009

Santosh Kuma's Answer

Generally, no. HDTV and dolby digital are not widely used yet, therefore the DVR capability is not available yet.

Additional info for the United States - some cable companies (Comcast, Time Warner) now offer DVRs from Motorola and Scientific Atlanta that record and playback in HD with whatever audio is broadcast; usually for only about $5/mo for the equipment rental.

At this point all HD DVR boxes available in New Jersey record in HD and in Dolby Digital, as long as that is how the source is being broadcast from the cable company.

What is the benefit of connecting a DVR to a home network?

Asked by Naveen Misra in Electronics & Gadgets at   4:15 PM on February 03, 2009

Santosh Kuma's Answer

Connecting your DVR to your wireless network allows you to transfer and view media files, like digital photos and music, from your PC and view them on your DVR. For example, most DVRs allow you to store and organize your digital photos and view them on your TV. Some even let you play MP3 files directly from your DVR.

Here is the hardware you'll need to connect your DVR to an existing wireless network. (The following items are typical hardware needed to hook your DVR to your wireless network. Actual steps and some hardware may vary according to your network setup.)

* Compatible wireless USB network adapter for your DVR. Consult your DVR manufacturer for more information about compatible network adapters.

* USB cable (to hook the wireless USB network adapter to your DVR).

* After you hook up the wireless USB network adapter, youll need to configure your DVR. For TiVo DVRs, follow the on-screen guide for steps to configure your DVR to connect to your wireless network. For other DVRs, consult your owners guide.

Diferrence between Bluray and HDdvd?

Asked by Anonymous in Electronics & Gadgets at   2:33 PM on February 03, 2009

Santosh Kuma's Answer

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, as I expect you know are the next generation in film viewing. By using a shorter more accurate blue laser instead of the standard red laser more information can be stored on the same size disk. This makes them ideal for high definition films.

The main difference between them is capacity, Bluray can hold 25Gb on a single layer disk, and 50Gb on a dual layer disk, whereas HD-DVD is only able to hold 15Gb single layer, and 30Gb dual layer. HD-DVD disks are more reliable than BR disks, though only marginally so.

Another point worth looking at is the price of the players.

Currently a HD-DVD player is around £350 GBP, whereas a Bluray player is around £450 GBP. A much more sensible idea is to buy either a PS3 (£400-ish with bluray player built in), or a XBox 360 (£300-ish with expandable HD-DVD drive). Pay around the same price for a HD player and get the ability to play games as well.

LG are supposedly developing a player which will play either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. I heard about this a month or so ago, and don't know what stage they are at. As it stands, things are very tight, however I would say HD-DVD is currently more available and cheaper.

Is it possible to download saved programs from a DVR dish network to a computer?

Asked by Naveen Misra in Electronics & Gadgets at   4:14 PM on February 03, 2009

Santosh Kuma's Answer

1. Yes, you can download the saved programs from DVR to a computer; to connect it you need cable or enclosure and to read the recorded material you need a software such as PVR Explorer that can read linux file system (Windows will not be able to see the DVR hard drive).

You can connect the hard drive to a Desktop or Laptop PC (you can connect directly using IDE or SATA cable or use an external hard drive enclosure or an IDE to USB cable). Once the hard drive is connected you can use a software like PVR Explorer (free, open source software) to browse through the vidoes and copy them to your PC:

http://sourceforge.net/proje ct/showfiles.php?group_id=165873

As of 1-17-2009, the PVR Explorer supports Dish/Echostar 501/508/510/522/625 model numbers. Many DVRs have a warranty sticker on the hard drive enclosure inside the DVR and removing the sticker would void the warranty. In some cases you can still connect to the

2. It is possible to download saved programs from a Dish Network DVR using a Generation 5 Archos Multimedia Mobile device (Archos 605 WiFi and 705 WiFi).

But only a few DVR's are supported (ViP722, ViP622, and ViP612 -- although the Archos website doesn't mention support for the ViP612).

The only small step to be able to download your video content from the DVR to the Archos is to install a free plug-in (the link can be found at the Dish Network/Archos website).

Where should the sub woofer be placed?

Asked by Anonymous in Electronics & Gadgets at   2:33 PM on February 03, 2009

Santosh Kuma's Answer

That's the nice thing about a subwoofer. Since it carries mainly lower bass audio frequencies, you can place it most anywhere you want as the sound will be present anywhere in the room. Some people place them in a corner, behind a sofa, under a desk, inside a cabinet with an open grilled front, hide it behind a large planter or even on a shelf. In essence, the subwoofer is one of those types of speakers that doesn't really carry much if any any stereo (right/left channel) information and is largely non directional.

I've even seen them placed between the floor joists through a hole in the floor with a vent grille covering the opening.

For best results, place it several areas in your room, conspicuously or inconspicuously and when you feel it sounds the best, that's the place where it goes until you decide to move it again.

How do you hook up a VCR and DVD recorder to a TV?

Asked by Anonymous in Electronics & Gadgets at   2:33 PM on February 03, 2009

Santosh Kuma's Answer

You have easy two options.
1: if your TV has video/audio connections then plug the DVD player into the Video/Audio ports on the TV. Connect the Antenna/cable from the wall to the input on the VCR and then connect a cable from the output of the VCR to the TV. Put the TV on 3 or 4 to watch the VCR and on Video to watch the DVD

2: If your TV does not have Video/Audio inputs then connect the DVD to the VCR Video/Audio inputs and connect the VCR to the TV as described in option. TO watch DVD select the DVD as the input for the VCR and then turn the TV to CH 3 or 4.

How does a television produce images?

Asked by Anonymous in Electronics & Gadgets at   2:33 PM on February 03, 2009

Santosh Kuma's Answer

When you watch TV, your eyes see moving images. But you are really watching still pictures. That's because the images change so quickly(about 30 times every second!) that as far as your eyes are concerned, what you see is actually moving.
Your television collects electric signals from radio waves sent through the air (or from a VCR or DVD player hookup or through cable wires) to the television's antenna. Wherever the elctric signals come from, the television does the same job with them-it converts them to sound and pictures.
To show the pictures, your television uses a system of many dots, called pixels. Imagine each pixel as a box on graph paper (only much, much tinier!). The television signals tell which box to make red, which to make green, and which to make blue in order to create a picture on screen. When all of these tiny pixels appear on the screen, your brain reads them as one complete image.
