What is the difference between an LCD and a plasma television?

Asked by Naveen Misra in Electronics & Gadgets at   9:20 AM on February 03, 2009

Santosh Kuma's Answer

LCD televisions use a LCD (liquid crystal display) screen (usually around 2X2") through which a bright lamp is shown and then the picture goes through a series of lenses to enlarge it for projection on the screen.

Plasma sets have a glass casing which is filled with a gridwork of fine wires that actually arc at the poits where they cross over each other (one set for red, one set for blue and one set for green. The arcing causes UV light to be generated. The UV light then excites phosphors that glow in return, projecting a "bead" of color that you see through the screen.

After this, we'd then go into a ton of techno-babble, but you can find out more by searching the web.

How to reset Scientific Atlanta Explorer 4200HD?

Asked by Naveen Misra in Electronics & Gadgets at   8:32 AM on February 03, 2009

Santosh Kuma's Answer

You can do what is referred to as a `hard reset' simply by unplugging it for a few minutes. Once plugged back in, the receiver's internal operating system will be forced to reboot and re-acquire the signal. This method is usually good for removing all the little glitches in your receiver, like not responding to all the remote control signals, freezing, etc.

How do you use a splitter to watch cable on two televisions?

Asked by Naveen Misra in Electronics & Gadgets at   8:32 AM on February 03, 2009

Santosh Kuma's Answer

You need a TV signal splitter. They're cheap and available just about everywhere, like Walmart, K-Mart, electronics stores. Just split the `antenna out' connection from the cable box. You'll also need a couple more signal wires (coaxial cables) otherwise you'll be two wires short of having what you need. One from the cable box to the splitter and then one for each TV.

When was cable television created?

Asked by Naveen Misra in Electronics & Gadgets at   8:28 AM on February 03, 2009

Santosh Kuma's Answer

Invention of Cable TV

The first cable TV system was most likely created in the late 50's to early sixties. At that time, they were called CATV systems, or community antenna systems, where a town was sandwiched in a valley or where the closest TV stations were so far away that the normal rooftop antenna couldn't receive a clear picture.

So, what they usually did was erect a large tower and put the antennas up high. Then they would amplify the signal and send it to their cable feeds to the homes. It was a bit more complicated than that, but this is basically what they did.

Then someone got the idea to set up some weather gauges and put a video camera on it, feeding an RF modulator on some open channel and that was the birth of the local cable company.

After that, satellite communications became possible and then program providers could send their shows all over the country. The cable providers would set up their `head end`, which was a collection of satellite dishes and other equipment to be able to send the signal down their cable, for a fee, of course.

That's a brief explanation and it would take some research to identify the first `official` cable company, but by and large, that's how many got their starts.

How does color television work?

Asked by Naveen Misra in Electronics & Gadgets at   8:28 AM on February 03, 2009

Santosh Kuma's Answer

Color TV works by putting sending more or less power through lights of different colors. In the old cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs, this was done with a phosphorus screen and a proton particle beam. In newer LCD and plasma TVs, each pixel is a light and is turned on or off in varying degrees of intensity.
