What is Dermatitis?

Asked by Kailash Negi in Personal Health at   3:02 PM on October 07, 2008

Sanya Tahir's Answer

The simple definition of dermatitis is inflammation of the skin. Many people think of dermatitis as synonymous with eczema but this is actually not true. Almost any rash can be thought of as a dermatitis based on this definition - including psoriasis, skin cancer, and seborrhea. However, we don't call every rash a dermatitis. There are several distinct types of dermatitis that are delineated by the causative agent or the cellular mechanism responsible for the rash.

Why do we yawn?

Asked by Tingtong S in Personal Health at   7:50 PM on October 06, 2008

Sanya Tahir's Answer

Although not fully understood, yawning appears to be not only a sign of tiredness but also a much more general sign of changing conditions within the body. Studies have shown that we yawn when we are fatigued, as well as when we are awakening, and during other times when the state of alertness is changing.
Yawning is a stereotypical reflex characterized by a single deep inhalation (with the mouth open) and stretching of muscles of the jaw and trunk. It occurs in many animals, including humans, and involves interactions between the unconscious brain and the body, though the mechanism remains unclear. As for the etiology of yawning, for many years it was thought that yawns served to bring in more air because low oxygen levels were sensed in the lungs. We now know, however, that the lungs do not necessarily sense oxygen levels. Moreover, fetuses yawn in utero even though their lungs arent yet ventilated. In addition, different regions of the brain control yawning and breathing.

How do antibiotics work?

Asked by Tingtong S in Personal Health at   7:49 PM on October 06, 2008

Sanya Tahir's Answer

Antibiotics, sometimes known as antibacterials, are drugs used to treat infections caused by bacteria. These are tiny organisms, too small to see with the naked eye, that sometimes cause illness in humans. Well-known illnesses caused by bacteria include tuberculosis, salmonella, syphilis and some forms of meningitis. However many types of bacteria do not cause illness and live harmlessly on, and in, the human body. Some antibiotics work against aerobic bacteria, that is organisms that need oxygen to live, while others work against anaerobic bacteria, organisms that don't need oxygen. Sometimes antibiotics are given to prevent an infection occurring, for example, before certain operations.

Our immune systems, with their antibodies and special white blood cells, can usually kill harmful bacteria before they multiply enough to cause symptoms. And even when symptoms do occur, the body can often fight off the infection. But sometimes the body is overwhelmed by a bacterial infection and needs help to get rid of it.

Does meditation have health benefits?

Asked by Raman Iyer in Personal Health at   2:25 PM on October 09, 2008

Sanya Tahir's Answer

Though meditation is usually recognized as a largely spiritual practice, it also has many health benefits. The yoga and meditation techniques are being implemented in management of life threatening diseases; in transformation of molecular and genetic structure; in reversal of mental illnesses, in accelerated learning programs, in perceptions and communications beyond the physical, in solving problems and atomic and nuclear physics; in gaining better ecological understanding; in management of lifestyle and future world problems.

Most of the people who get on meditation do so because of its beneficial effects on stress. Stress refers to any or all the various pressures experienced in life. These can stem from work, family, illness, or environment and can contribute to such conditions as anxiety, hypertension, and heart disease. How an individual sees things and how he or she handles them makes a big difference in terms of how much stress he or she experiences.

Research has shown that hormones and other biochemical compounds in the blood indicative of stress tend to decrease during TM practice. These changes also stabilize over time, so that a person is actually less stressed biochemically during daily activity.

Body temperature - Why does it rise when you are ill?

Asked by Tingtong S in Personal Health at   7:50 PM on October 06, 2008

Sanya Tahir's Answer

When we are ill our body fights against the infection with the help of antibodies. In the process of producing more antibodies our body heats up. More temperature more is the production of antibodies. Substances like pyrogens causes fever. They move through bloodstream send message to hypothalamus in brain which controls body temperature.Hypothalamus further send message to the body which causes shivering increase in heart rate etc.
Rise in the temperature of body indicates that our body is sick and fever takes our body to a temperature which is not friendly for the virus in our body and therefore helps us to get well soon.

Secrets To Maintaining Robuste long Hair?

Asked by rita karat in Beauty & Fashion at   7:36 PM on October 06, 2008

Sanya Tahir's Answer

The health of the hair is affected by heredity, the overall health of the individual, and by the diet. Sometimes the best hair loss products are what you put on your plate, not on your head! Slow growing hair and hair loss can often times be traced back to a diet that is low in fruits and vegetables and high in fast food and additives. Smokers will also see these problems with their hair.

Select a gentle shampoo, perhaps even a baby shampoo, and avoid products with alcohol like gels and hair sprays. These items cause the hair to dry out and to become brittle which promotes breakage.

A hot oil treatment is a luxury that you can also experience at home. Mix a quarter of a cup of soybean or canola oil in a glass container. Place the cup in a hot water bath to heat the oil. With your hands, massage the oil onto your wet hair and leave it there for just two minutes. Wash your hair with your favorite shampoo and rinse very well. If it is available in your area, use coconut oil, which has more nutritive properties than canola oil.

Mix four tablespoons of plain, natural yogurt with one whole egg. Shampoo your hair and rinse very well. Pour the mixture onto your hair and massage thoroughly, carefully working from the roots to the tips of your hair. Leave the mixture on for about five to ten minutes. Rinse the mixture well with cool water. This can help your hair become tangle-freeand healthy.

Hair care is very easy to do, and not to mention cheap. With these natural hair care remedies, you are sure to maintain beautiful and healthy long locks.
