Calcium is the most abundant mineral that is present in the human body which performs several functions apart from bone building such as muscle contractions, blood clotting, maintaining normal heart rhythm and hormone secretion. It cannot be manufactured in the human body and has to be supplied form outside meaning the food that we eat. When a person is deficient in calcium that is he has less amount of calcium then required it is termed as a deficiency. Frequent muscle cramps is a symptom of calcium deficieny. Calcium deficieny leads to a condition called as osteoporosis in which the bones become porous and brittle and are more prone to fractures. Osteoporosis is more common in women and elderly people.
A person with calcium deficinecy should have calcium rich foods such as milk, curd, cottage cheese, rajgira, ragi, broccoli and spinach. In severe cases you may need to take calcium supplements.
