What is meant by a “real time system”?

Asked by rajanikumar in Computers & Technology at   2:50 PM on September 23, 2009

nishisanimalplanet's Answer

Computer systems in which the computer is required to perform its tasks within the time restraints of some process or simultaneously with the system it is assisting. Usually the computer must operate faster than the system assisted in order to be ready to intervene appropriately.

Real-time computer systems and applications span a number of different types.

In real-time control and real-time process control the computer is required to process systems data (inputs) from sensors for the purpose of monitoring and computing system control parameters (outputs) required for the correct operation of a system or process. The type of monitoring and control functions provided by the computer for subsystem units ranges over a wide variety of tasks, such as turn-on and turn-off signals to switches; feedback signals to controllers (such as motors, servos, and potentiometers) to provide adjustments or corrections; steering signals; alarms; monitoring, evaluation, supervision, and management calculations; error detection, and out-of-tolerance and critical parameter detection operations; and processing of displays and outputs.

In real-time assistance the computer is required to do its work fast enough to keep up with a person interacting with it (usually at a computer terminal device of some sort, for example, a screen and keyboard). The computer supports the person or persons interacting with it and provides access, retrieval, and storage functions, usually through some sort of database management system, as well as data processing and computational power. System access allows the individual to intervene in the system's operation. The real-time computer also often provides monitoring or display information, or both. See also Multiaccess computer.

In real-time robotics the computer is a part of a robotic or self-contained machine. Often the computer is embedded in the machine, which then becomes a smart machine. If the smart machine also has access to, or has embedded within it, artificial intelligence functions (for example, a knowledge base and knowledge processing in an expert system fashion), it becomes an intelligent machine. What is computer system? Explain structure of computer?

Asked Anonymously in Computers & Technology at   9:01 PM on September 21, 2009

nishisanimalplanet's Answer

The complete computer made up of the CPU, memory and related electronics (main cabinet), all the peripheral devices connected to it and its operating system. Computer systems fall into two broad divisions: clients and servers. Client machines fall into three categories from low to high end: laptop, desktop and workstation. Servers range from small to large: low-end servers, midrange servers and mainframes.

A computer system is sized for the total user workload based on (1) number of users sharing the system simultaneously, (2) type of work performed (interactive processing, batch processing, CAD, engineering, scientific), and (3) amount of storage. Following are the components of a computer system and their significance.

Platform

The hardware platform and operating system determine which programs can run on the computer. Every application is written to run under a specific CPU and operating system environment. The most widely used platform means more software is available for it. See platform.

Input/Output

A server's input/output (I/O) capacity determines the number of simultaneous users that it can support at terminals or PCs. See channel.

Number of CPUs and Cores

The more CPUs, the more processing that can take place at the same time. High-end servers often contain multiple processors. The CPU chip itself may include more than one processor. See SMT and dual core.

Clock Speed

The megahertz or gigahertz rate of the CPU determines internal processing speed. See MHz.

Disk and Memory

A computer system's disk capacity determines the amount of information immediately available to all users. Its memory capacity determines how many applications can be efficiently run at the same time.

Fault Tolerance

The use of redundant processors, peripherals and power supplies provide continued operation in the event of component failure. See fault tolerant.

What is tier architecture?

Asked by babita1_love in Computers & Technology at   7:16 PM on September 21, 2009

nishisanimalplanet's Answer

In software engineering, multi-tier architecture (often referred to as n-tier architecture) is a client-server architecture in which the presentation, the application processing, and the data management are logically separate processes. For example, an application that uses middleware to service data requests between a user and a database employs multi-tier architecture. The most widespread use of "multi-tier architecture" refers to three-tier architecture.

The concepts of layer and tier are often used interchangeably. However, one fairly common point of view is that there is indeed a difference, and that a layer is a logical structuring mechanism for the elements that make up the software solution, while a tier is a physical structuring mechanism for the system infrastructure. What are the basic functions of an operating system?

Asked Anonymously in Computers & Technology at   1:50 AM on September 17, 2009

nishisanimalplanet's Answer

An operating system (OS) is a software program, but it is different from word processing programs, spreadsheets, and all the other software programs on your computer. As you may recall from Chapter 1, the OS is an example of system software—software that controls the system’s hardware and that interacts with the user and application software. In short, the operating system is the computer’s master control program. The OS provides you with the tools (commands) that enable you to interact with the PC. When you issue a command, the OS translates it into code that the machine can use. The OS ensures that the results of your actions are displayed on screen, printed, and so on. The operating system also acts as the primary controlling mechanism for the computer’s hardware.
The operating system performs the following functions:
 Displays the on-screen elements with which you interact—the user interface.
 Loads programs (such as word processing and spreadsheet programs) into the computer’s memory so that you can use them.
 Coordinates how programs work with the computer’s hardware and other software.
 Manages the way information is stored on and retrieved from disks.
In this lesson you will learn about the types of operating systems and the services they provide. Then you will learn about some of the enhancements you can make to your OS using utility software.

Define the terms “Extranet”& “Intranet”.?

Asked by rajanikumar in Computers & Technology at   10:16 AM on September 22, 2009

nishisanimalplanet's Answer

intranet
A network within an organization that uses Internet technologies and protocols, but is available only to certain people, such as employees of a company. An intranet is also called a private network.

Extranet - Private network that uses the Internet protocols and the public telecommunication system to securely share part of a business's information or operations with suppliers, vendors, partners, customers, or other businesses. An extranet can be viewed as part of a company's Intranet that is extended to users outside the company.
