Asked by Mitana Mukhe in Books & Authors at   1:01 AM on February 02, 2009

myjunction's Answer

Brood of the Witch Queen is a 1918 supernatural novel by Arthur Henry Sarsfield Ward, known better under his pseudonym, Sax Rohmer.

The story deals with Robert Cairn and his suspicions of Anthony Ferrara, the adopted son of an old friend and colleague of Robert's father, Dr Bruce Cairn, of infernal magic and supernatural influence.

Plot

The novel begins with the strange murder of Mr Ferrara. A horrifying series of events follows, leading to a woman being used against her will to prey on her husband and then abducted and killed in inside a secret chamber in an old Egyptian pyramid. Only after a series of adventures and investigation is Anthony Ferrara made powerless by Dr Bruce destroying the source of his control — the famed Book of Thoth — upon which Ferrara is no longer able to control the elemental he has summoned and is found as a burned corpse the day after.

CHINESE CINDERELLA AND THE SECRET DRAGON SOCIETY
by Adeline Yen Mah

HarperTrophy
ISBN-10: 0060567368
ISBN-13: 9780060567361
Ages 10-up
256 pages

Chinese Cinderella, known fondly as "CC" by her friends, finds refuge with a very special group of people when her father throws her out of the house for showing disrespect: "'Get out of my house this minute! Get out and never come back!' He was in such a rage that he grabbed the back of my school uniform and lifted me off the floor as if I were a kitten. Then he marched to the back door, dumped me outside and slammed the door behind me."

Alone on the streets of Shanghai, CC is in the process of finding her way to her Big Aunt's apartment when she sees a fantastic demonstration of martial arts by three athletic young men at a local bazaar. These young people and their teacher, known as "Grandma Wu," befriend her. Later CC learns that they are part of a very special group known as The Secret Dragon Society --- an ancient branch of the Shaolin Association of Wandering Knights, which has been in China for over 1,400 years. Their purpose is to help those who suffer injustices. CC soon begins schooling under their strict guidelines and also training in the special art of kung fu under Master Wu, son of Grandma Wu. She is made to feel welcome among these strangers, who offer shelter and the possibility of a better life in a China that has been taken over by the Japanese just before the outbreak of World War II. At first, most of CC's adventures center on her development as she learns more about The Secret Dragon Society and tries to sort out the emotional turmoil over her estrangement from her family. Niang (her father's wife) seems to have declared an all-out war against CC as she successfully manipulates those around her and pursues CC in an attempt to control her. CC's refuge is found in both her loving aunt and the dear friends surrounding Grandma Wu at the academy. But her life changes dramatically when they all become involved in saving some American pilots who are being held captive by the Japanese. The danger, the courage and the heroic efforts that go into this mission are totally captivating. Although the price is high and the risk great, CC, Grandma Wu and the three other children are able to help the American soldiers --- but not without some tragedy. Adeline Yen Mah's story resonates with factual events woven beautifully into this thrilling, inspiring adventure. Provided at the end of this fast-moving book is the addition of "Historical Notes" explaining the factual events surrounding this time of war in China. This is followed by a "Glossary of Chinese Words," an abbreviated explanation of "The Chinese Zodiac," and finally, the author's bibliographical sources. Throughout the book there are references to Chinese legends and lore, and these additions are immensely helpful. This is a wonderful book for sparking class discussion and definitely great for book talking.

Yen Mah, author of the previously published CHINESE CINDERELLA: THE TRUE STORY OF AN UNWANTED DAUGHTER, reminds us again of what a truly inspiring storyteller she is.

CHIG AND THE SECOND SPREAD
by Gwenyth Swain

Delacorte Press
ISBN: 0385730659
Ages 8-12
208 pages

For Chig Kalpin, being small is just about the biggest trial there is. Her real name is Minerva but she has always been called Chig, short for Chigger. It was a name her father gave her, a name given to her with affection because she was such a tiny baby. Unfortunately, some of the boys in school latch on to her nickname and persecute her until she feels as small as small can be. She wishes she was big and tough and able to show those boys a thing or two. With every passing day, her lack of inches becomes more and more of a worry. Chig looks into whether or not she is eating the right types of food to encourage growth. She asks her teacher and family about her problem. Surely, she isn't going to stay under five feet tall for the rest of her life.

Chig gets so caught up in her own problem that she almost misses seeing what is happening to the people around her and to her town. It all begins when Chig realizes that some of the children in her class have only one spread on their sandwiches for lunch. It had always been the norm to have two. Clearly, things are getting very bad indeed if the children's parents can only afford one spread. She then notices that there are more and more men sitting and standing around the stove at the store. There is no work to be had. The Depression has come to her little town and the hollows around it. Chig decides that there has to be something she can do to help the people of Niplak put a second spread on their children's sandwiches.

What follows is an extraordinary, often funny, and quite delightful series of events that Chig uses to bring about her hopes and dreams for her town. In the process Chig realizes that there is much more to being big than she ever dreamed, and the people of Niplak discover that they have a truly remarkable person in the midst, a person with courage and conviction, despite the fact that she is very short of stature.

Gwenyth Swain has written a book packed with charm, lovable characters, and a real understanding of what it was like to live through the Depression. She gathered stories from family members and other sources and put them together in a way that shows us how she loved the telling of this marvelous tale and how much she enjoyed being able to honor those who lived the stories she used.

What is THE CHICKEN DANCE by Jacques Couvillon all about?

Asked by Mitana Mukhe in Books & Authors at   12:47 AM on February 02, 2009

myjunction's Answer

THE CHICKEN DANCE
by Jacques Couvillon

Bloomsbury USA Children’s Books
ISBN: 9781599900438
Ages 9-12
336 pages

Eleven-year-old Don Schmidt leads a lonely and solitary life. Trained early for complete submission by his aloof parents, Don never speaks unless spoken to. That includes everyone, even other children. Any attention he receives is limited to screeching criticism from his mother and harsh teasing from the kids at school, especially popular Leon. His father goes to work and then comes home to stare at the TV, basically ignoring him. There is one exception to Don’s lonely world --- the chickens.

A few years ago, the family had some financial troubles. Then a relative of Mr. Schmidt’s dies, leaving them a house in Louisiana. Of course, the will states a few unusual terms and conditions. In order to inherit the house, the Schmidts will have to maintain a minimum of 25 chickens. Mrs. Schmidt despises the chickens and constantly fears catching diseases from them; Mr. Schmidt could care less, but he feeds them in order to maintain the will’s stipulations. Don loves the chickens; they are his friends and the only ones who listen to him.

When Don’s father goes away on a business trip, it is up to his disgruntled mother to tend the chickens. Don scratches up some courage and asks her if he could take over the care of his feathered friends. To his surprise and delight, she agrees, and Don delves into the chicken farming world, taking charge and upgrading their meager standard of living. He also buys a book on everything there is to know about chickens, including the different kinds and their egg-laying capabilities. When the annual chicken judging contest arrives, he is ready.

Don wins the contest for his age group, leaving the rest of the contestants in his dust. And then his world changes dramatically. People in town recognize him and calls out hellos, kids want to sit by him at lunch, Leon wishes to be best friends and everyone is interested in buying Don’s famous eggs. Don’s mother eventually sees how this new-fangled fame can benefit herself and starts haggling eggs for favors. But when she has him cleaning out the closet to prepare for a dinner party with some influential people, Don discovers a clue to a family secret that will change his life forever.

Most people probably don’t think much about chickens, or regard them with a high value, but actually they offer much to anyone who bothers to open their eyes. It’s the same with kind-hearted Don Schmidt. His moving tale, set in the 1970s, offers many surprises and insights into one particularly damaged and dysfunctional family. Jacques Couvillon’s first novel is a blue-ribbon winner, and readers eagerly will be awaiting his next book.

Looking for a detailed review of CHASING VERMEER by Blue Balliett?

Asked by Mitana Mukhe in Books & Authors at   12:44 AM on February 02, 2009

myjunction's Answer

CHASING VERMEER
by Blue Balliett and illustrated by Brett Helquist

Scholastic
ISBN: 0439372976
Ages 8-12
272 pages

• Read an Excerpt

Secrets, lies and mysteries surround the work of one of the greatest artists of all time. Moonlit chases, hidden hiding places, and even a secret code help to solve the mystery. Is this the new sequel to THE DA VINCI CODE? Nope --- it's an equally entertaining novel for younger readers. CHASING VERMEER encourages kids to use all their creativity and problem-solving skills to tackle a real-life mystery surrounding the elusive painter Johannes Vermeer.

Calder Pillay and Petra Andalee are both a little odd. Their intellectual curiosity and their unique hobbies fit right in, though, with their eccentric families and with their creative classmates at the University of Chicago Lab School. When three mysterious letters show up in their neighborhood and seem linked to the theft of a famous Vermeer painting, a chain of coincidences brings Calder and Petra together to help solve the crime.

First-time author Blue Balliett seems to enjoy playing with coincidences, both plausible and far-fetched, and the theme of chance and coincidence cleverly runs through the novel. The novel, with its high-profile crime of a well-known painting (secretly reproduced on the book underneath the dust jacket), also seeks to inspire young people to appreciate art as both dynamic and relevant to their lives. "Children were thinking about Vermeer, too. They were comparing, writing, and visiting museums with friends. Many said that they hadn't realized how cool old pictures could be."

The novel's illustrations breathe almost as much life into the book as the text does. Illustrator Brett Helquist (best known for illustrating Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events) includes a full-page illustration for each chapter. Pay attention! Some of the drawings reveal a secret that careful readers can help uncover.

With its emphasis on puzzle-solving, CHASING VERMEER is reminiscent of classic novels like THE WESTING GAME. Its focus on connections and coincidences will remind many of HOLES, and its art-related mystery calls to mind FROM THE SECRET FILES OF MRS. BASIL E. FRANKWEILER. In other words, CHASING VERMEER deserves a spot alongside many well-loved children's books. It's that good.
