Is it mendatory to file Income Tax Return even for a person whose total annual income is below the income liable to be taxed.?

Asked Anonymously in Personal Finance & Tax at   12:23 PM on July 23, 2009

Memb Rane's Answer

It is not mandatory to file returns at income tax office, if one’s income is less than ceiling amount. However, if that person got PAN number and started filing income tax returns in the previous years, he should file a ‘Nil’ report eventhough his income is less in this year. According to Section 139 (1) (b) one should file income tax, if a person is a member of a club/ society whose entrance / subscription fee is not less than Rs.25,000/-. This section has some more parameters. Those who meet such conditions, must pay returns. But, in practice, most of the people do not file tax returns even though they are coming under the category of Section 139(1)(b) of the Income Tax Act.
