Why do I need vitamin D? What foods are rich in vitamin D?

Asked by shiv awasthi in Fitness at   9:24 PM on October 13, 2008

Meera Jadhav's Answer

Hi, Vitamin D is important in many ways. Vitamin D helps maintain bone density, healthy bone growth and helps maintain the normal functioning of the nervous system. It is crucially important in aiding the body’s absorption of calcium. Without sufficient vitamin D, calcium supplements are almost useless. Vitamin D insufficiency is a contributing factor of osteoporosis, as calcium absorption cannot be maximized. It has also been found that having a higher intake of vitamin D can help lower certain cancer risks, such as breast, prostate and colorectal cancer. Vitamin D is unique because it is derived both from sunlight and foods.

• Sunlight: Vitamin D is synthesized by the body by the action of UV rays of sunlight of 7 dehydrocholesterol, which is stored in large abundance in the skin.
• Foods: Vitamin occurs by only in the foods of animal origin. Liver, egg yolk, butter and cheese and some species of fish contain useful amounts. Fish liver oils, although not considered to be a food, are the richest sources of Vitamin D.
• Other sources of vitamin D are foods artificially fortified with vitamin D, such as milk, margarine, vanaspathi and infant foods.

Asked by Gaurav Verma in Fitness at   12:46 AM on October 15, 2008

Meera Jadhav's Answer

Hi Gaurav, your diet and exercise plan depends on your goal of training. As you have not mentioned anything about your goal and also about your weight, I am just giving you some general tips which you can follow:
1. Eat your meal about 2-3 hours before exercise.
2. High-carbohydrate foods are the best options: e.g., bread, cereals, fruit, pasta, rice, etc.
3. Ensure that the meal is low fat, these speeds up digestion.
4. You can have a drink to optimize hydration: try sports drink, juice, or a liquid meal.
5. Avoid the caffeine in cola drinks, coffee, chocolate, and tea - it is dehydrating.
6. Include variety of low fat foods in the diet.
7. Include enough proteins in the diet. . Include milk, milk products, nuts, soy, sprouts, dals and pulses in your diet. If you are non-vegetarian then include egg, chicken and fish as they are richest source of protein.
8. Include green leafy veggies, fruits, salads, nuts, low fat milk, and low fat paneer.
9. Avoid oily, fatty, junk and processed foods.
10. Drink plenty of water.
11. Exercise at least 3 to5 times a week for about 30 to 45 minutes a day. Do aerobic exercises (walking/cycling/swimming) to burn extra calories and a weight training workout to help tighten and strengthen the muscles.

Causes of Fracture

Asked by rinku in Personal Health at   10:51 AM on October 15, 2008

Meera Jadhav's Answer

Hi Rinku fractures occur when there is more force applied to the bone than the bone can absorb. Bones are weakest when they are twisted.

Breaks in bones can occur from falls, trauma, or as a result of a direct blow or kick to the body.
In adults lack of calcium intake or osteoporosis also can lead to fractures.

What is Filaria?

Asked by rinku in Personal Health at   10:50 AM on October 15, 2008

Meera Jadhav's Answer

Hi Rinku, filariasis is a parasitic and infectious tropical disease. It is caused by thread-like parasitic worms. Examples are Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori. The parasites are transmitted by insect bites, usually mosquitoes. The most spectacular symptom of lymphatic filariasis is elephantiasis—thickening of the skin and underlying tissues—which was the first disease discovered to be transmitted by a mosquito bite. Elephantiasis is caused when the parasites lodge in the lymphatic system.
