What are disc brakes?

Asked by chennaiboy in Cars and Bikes at   12:43 PM on November 03, 2007

MR Owais's Answer

disc brakes were first used on sports cars in the 1950s, but most cars today are fitted with them front and rear. A calliper forces pads lined with friction material against a spinning rotor to generate a braking force. Braking with discs is much more efficient than the older drum brake system. A braking system for all NASCAR series racers that features a rotating disc attached to each wheel and a caliper that contains hydraulically actuated pads that squeeze the disc to slow and stop its rotation.

What is an SRS airbag?

Asked by kennedy in Cars and Bikes at   3:09 PM on November 03, 2007

MR Owais's Answer

supplementary or secondary restraint system airbag’s function is to add to the protection provided by the primary restraint system the seatbelts. Having an airbag might be the difference between a big crash and a fatal crash. Upon starting an airbag equipped car, an SRS warning lamp should illuminate on the instrument panel. It signals that the airbag system is self-checking itself. Once the check has been performed the SRS warning lamp will go out this usually takes about 7 seconds. The SRS airbag inflator contains a solid chemical gas generator. The solid chemicals are safely stored in a metal chamber inside the SRS airbag module. Each inflator is sealed to keep out moisture. SRS airbags are designed to deploy in moderate to major crashes only and should not deploy in minor crashes.

I have heard about anti-lock braking system. What is this?

Asked by eagertoknow in Cars and Bikes at   3:18 PM on November 03, 2007

MR Owais's Answer

System that prevents wheel lock-up by automatically regulating the brakes. ABS can decrease braking distances, prevent skidding and allow more control during sudden stops. This braking system senses any significant difference in wheel speed, from one wheel to another, when a vehicle is braking hard. When any of the wheels begin to lock up (completely stop rotating), ABS automatically reduces the braking forces to that wheel or wheels in order to keep all the wheels rolling – to prevent break-induced skidding. ABS can control all four wheels (cars and most 4x4s have this system) or any two. The system can group wheels together in "channels" of operation (i.e. a three-channel ABS system on a four-wheeled vehicle) or have one channel for each wheel (four-channel ABS).
