ALL hormonal methods of birth control have the opportunity to create side effects. This is because the chemicals that are placed into the body react differently with each person.
The best method for someone who cannot remember to take a pill every day might be to try the NuvaRing. The ring is inserted for 3 weeks, out for 1 (for the period), then a new one is inserted.
The shot is effective for 3 months at a time, but many women report extreme side effects from this method (though I never experienced any).
Some people might recommend an IUD; however this method is NOT recommended for anyone who's never carried a pregnancy to term. Also, the IUD has a long list of physical side effects ranging from heavy and irregular bleeding to medical emergencies requiring surgery.
There are also barrier methods, but those require planning. BUT, they don't require a daily necessity to remember.
So either she gets better about taking the pill, looks into the Ring or shot, or you two learn to use a diaphragm or condom.
YOU could remember to call her daily and tell her to take her pill; or she could get into a routine of taking them when she brushes her teeth (this is what I do, and I RARELY miss a pill).
