Who came up with the word philately?

Asked by premkumar v in Do It Yourself at   4:10 PM on January 26, 2009

Keshto Patel's Answer

The coining of the word "philately" in its French form has been thus far been historically attributed to Georges Herpin in the publication Le Collectionneur de timbres-postes, Vol. 1, November 15, 1864. It is formed from the Greek words philos, and ateleia ( meaning "exempt from duties and taxes") as postage stamp(s) indicate that no service charge is to be collected from the recipient as they constitute franking and thus confirm the pre-payment of postal fees by the sender or another. The alternative terms "timbrophily" and "timbrology" are far less commonly used.

What year were the first stamps issued in the United States?

Asked by premkumar v in Do It Yourself at   4:11 PM on January 26, 2009

Keshto Patel's Answer

Officially sanctioned mail service began in 1692 when King William III granted a delivery "patent" to an English nobleman, which came with exclusive rights to set up and run a postal service. Routes were set up between New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Portsmouth by the following year. Riders made the runs individually, rather than by relay. A single sheet letter cost 9 pence between New York and Boston.
