What is the difference between a PDF and a JPEG file?

Asked by munna in Computers & Technology at   6:04 PM on November 09, 2007

Jyotishmaan's Answer

PDF stands for Portable Document Format. PDF is an Adobe PostScript standard file format that is very popular on the web because it preserves the graphical look of a document. PDF files have become de facto standard for transmitting documents to commercial printers and to the Web for online publishing. The file extension of the PDF files are .pdf. Jpeg on the other hand is an acronym for Joint Photographic Experts Group that describes a digital image file format standard in which the size of the file is reduced by compression. Strictly speaking, JPEG is not a file format; it's a compression method that is used within a file format. Some quality is lost in achieving JPEG's high compression rates. A JPEG image file name carries the extension "jpg".

What is Localhost?

Asked by Subash in Computers & Technology at   7:27 AM on November 08, 2007

Jyotishmaan's Answer

"Localhost" is an alias for the address 127.0.0.1, an address that always indicates the local computer. This is the address that a computer can use to refer to itself. For example, when testing a Web application on the same computer as the server, you can use the address http://127.0.0.1 or http://localhost.

Why are there 1024 bytes in a kilobyte?

Asked by debasis in Computers & Technology at   11:16 PM on November 09, 2007

Jyotishmaan's Answer

In the context of computers memory, everything is measured in the powers of 2. 2^0=1, 2^1=2,2^2=4.......2^9=512, 2^10 = 1024, 2^11=2048 and so on. Since, 2^10 (binary prefix )is nearer to kilo units of metric system like MKS etc, where the unit of mass is Kilogram and the unit of distance is kilometer, all in terms of 10^3. So, a collection of 1024 bytes are taken as 1KB( One Kilo Byte). (SI prefix).

Explain virtualization.

Asked by nilisha in Computers & Technology at   4:57 PM on November 07, 2007

Jyotishmaan's Answer

Virtualization means to create a virtual version of a device or resource, such as a server, storage device, network or even an operating system where the framework divides the resource into one or more execution environments. Even something as simple as partitioning a hard drive is considered virtualization because you take one drive and partition it to create two separate hard drives. Devices, applications and human users are able to interact with the virtual resource as if it were a real single logical resource. The term virtualization has become somewhat of a buzzword, and as a result the term is now associated with a number of computing technologies including the following: * storage virtualization: the amalgamation of multiple network storage devices into what appears to be a single storage unit. * server virtualization: the partitioning a physical server into smaller virtual servers. * operating system-level virtualization: a type of server virtualization technology which works at the operating system (kernel) layer. * network virtualization: using network resources through a logical segmentation of a single physical network.

What are line iteractive ups

Asked by enviornment in Computers & Technology at   4:23 PM on November 07, 2007

Jyotishmaan's Answer

A line interactive UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) system differs from the less expensive standby UPS system in that the line interactive system provides a voltage boost on sags without accessing the batteries. This allows continuous line conditioning, increases battery life, and eliminates electronic noise.
