Having strength to acknowledge this is far better than many grown ups I know. You are not living in denial as they do and how old are you?
Sometimes we grow up that way do to social environments at home and school. It has to do with "feeling" secure. When you are with people who know you, you have already established a bond and you know they accept you for who you are.
With new people, you are less secure and you feel insecure because somewhere in your subconscious, you know you may not be accepted and or loved...
The top ten most desirable things a normal reasonable human being wants is to be accepted and loved... The key is, how far do we believe we need to go to raise or lower our moral boundaries of what is acceptable to allow a person (including ourselves) to become a part of the group?
Everything starts with a thought. Let go of all the negative reasons, explainations, justifications and excuses not to do something fun and healthy and do it. I pray and meditate to get rid of my negative energy and fears.
When I open my heart to God and empty it, there is more room for His love and positive energy.
If it is crowds, you can go to a place where you get to speak in front of crowds. EXPERIENCE is the best teacher as we eventually realise we make something in time forward of where we are worse than what it is...Like Aww crap I don't wantto go to school or... work...We make it bad and we have not even gotten there yet...best of luck
