What is the most popular sports team in the world?

Asked by suresh in Cricket & Other Sports at   4:04 PM on February 26, 2009

Jateen Gutta's Answer

Cricket is the sports which is only famous and popular in India but outside India I think as far as having the most FANS probably Manchester United takes it.

You can go anywhere in the world from Eskimos up north to islanders in the south pacific and you will find SOMEONE wearing a t-shirt of Manchester and Liverpool!!!

The same cant be said about Man. U. Like I said, I do believe the most numerous, loyal and rabid fans of any team in the world.. but I dont think they are the Red Devils are the most RECOGNIZABLE...

What are some unknown sports?

Asked by suresh in Cricket & Other Sports at   3:59 PM on February 26, 2009

Jateen Gutta's Answer

Many such sports are there which are unknown to many people like Langdi party, Kabbdi and gilli danda, which are not known to anyone outside India and even Indians have not played this sports except for the rural people in India.

In International Disc golf is similar to traditional golf in that it has a tee and a hole. But instead of balls and clubs, players use different types of discs. Each throw is related to a stroke in conventional golf. Competitors start at a tee and aim at a hole.

One sport which is most likely not to have been heard of by anyone is Octopush. This is a 'fancy' word for under-water hockey. Each player has their own goggles/mask and snorkel, right/left handed rubber glove, and the 'hockey-stick' - which is about eight inches in length and one inch wide.

How to find a sports job?

Asked by suresh in Cricket & Other Sports at   3:57 PM on February 26, 2009

Jateen Gutta's Answer

Finding a job in any sector can be difficult, but finding one in sports is often a tedious and frustrating exercise.

Go the traditional route. Search the newspaper classifieds, but chances are this will net very few options.

Google! Hit the Internet and start searching the job boards. There are general ones such as Monster.com, but there are also more specific sites, such as Journalism Jobs.com, focusing on specific sectors.

Use your school's job center. You paid all that tuition, so use their services.

Hit the pavement. Get the addresses of local sports franchises, sports marketing firms or newspapers. It doesn't matter if they have a position or not. Ask for the human resource director and leave your resume, because you just never know.

How to appraise/collect Sports Memorabilia?

Asked by suresh in Cricket & Other Sports at   3:47 PM on February 26, 2009

Jateen Gutta's Answer

Collecting sports memorabilia can be fun no matter the value of the items you collect. However, the reality is sports memorabilia is also big business. Whether you're collecting to have fun, make money or a little of both, you need to do an appraisal for all the memorabilia you purchase and sell.

See how the experts value your item. Find a current sports memorabilia price guide, such as Tuff Stuff or Beckett, for the appropriate sport and see what the average price range your item is currently selling for around the country.

Assess the condition. One of the key factors in the value of sports memorabilia is the condition of the item and whether it's normal for the item, unusually good or unusually bad.

How is psychology used in sports?

Asked by suresh in Cricket & Other Sports at   3:46 PM on February 26, 2009

Jateen Gutta's Answer

It’s used basically to motivate players to their best performance. In competitive sports individuals may feel intimidated by the occasion, the weather conditions, the vociferous spectators, the opposition’s stature or on-field tactics, and so on.

These create under-confidence, anxiety and stress. During performance, the players may simply panic or choke under pressure and lose the game (although on paper they may be the stronger side.)

The sports psychologists keep track of the players’ mind frame. They help them work out of the stress-producing issues before the game, lifting confidence and morale.

How to make the sports team?

Asked by suresh in Cricket & Other Sports at   3:50 PM on February 26, 2009

Jateen Gutta's Answer

Trying out for a sports team is stressful, especially if it's you're first time trying out for a team. It's vital to remember that coaches are judging your skills and potential as a team player.

Find out the date of try-outs for the sport of interest. Research the rules and regulations of the sport and have at least a basic understanding of them. Resist the temptation to go out for a sport because someone else thinks it's a good idea.

Plan a fitness routine that complements the sport. Train to build strength and stamina. Talk to a trainer or fitness expert and get recommendations about kind of exercises that are best for the sport. You should be fine as long as you be in a good books of the coach.

How to write sports profile?

Asked by suresh in Cricket & Other Sports at   1:31 PM on February 26, 2009

Jateen Gutta's Answer

Often times, athletes and coaches are among the most interesting people that a journalist will get to profile. They're quirky, unique, smart and sometimes oddly-mannered. To truly write a good sports profile, you need to get inside the head of your subject.

Start the article with an anecdote. Something that is telling about your subject. A good, quirky story that really shows who the person is, and hammers home your point.

Talk to people that know him off the field/court. Your sources need to be people other than coaches and teammates.
You'll need to interview those people as well, but to truly give the reader a perception of someone, you'll need to quote the person's parents, family, friends or someone who has dealt with them in other settings besides sports.
