Though prescribing gemstones as remedial measure is a controversial subject. Vedic astrologers and western astrologers have different opinions about effectiveness of gemstones as remedy. My belief is gemstones work on aura level rather than physical body level. To use gemstones effectively as remedial measure, proper understanding of Ayurveda and Yoga is essential. Gem therapy can be used as astrological and Ayurvedic healing application.
Generally gemstones are worn in rings, as pendants or can be placed for a different body parts for a certain time period. Overall analysis of Birth chart, dasa and proper understanding of troubling issues at the moment is require.
Some general rules to prescribe gems are: Determine benefic and malefic planets, Badhaka planet in chart. Find out weak benefic planets, present Dasa, Antardasa of planet and associated houses. Lord of Ascendant, Rasi and Rasi lord, placemet of Moon etc play an important role in determining gemstone. Sometimes more than one gemstones can be used.Size of gemstone, metal in which gemstone is fixed etc plays important role.
Generally, gemstones should be prescribed to strengthen the weak benefic planets depending on current planetary Dasa. Sometimes gemstone can be prescribed for difficult transit also. Divisional charts should be verified before prescribing gemstones to determine the strength of a particular planet.
Please remember these are general rules. Detailed analysis of natal and divisional charts is essential before suggesting gemstones.
