HOW VIRUS FORMS?

Asked by vinay in Hyderabad at   7:51 AM on August 15, 2008

JAMWAL's Answer

Well, I'll assume you mean how they replicate, since they do not
(as far as we know) arise from inorganic materials. Viruses are generally thought
of as obligate parasites -- that is, they need the assistance of another organism
for their survival. Depending on the type of virus you're looking at you'll see
many different ways of accomplishing the same goal -- reproduction. In very
general terms, then, a virus will attach itself to an appropriate host cell and
insert it's genetic code into the DNA of the host, which then goes thorough it's
normal routine of reading through its own code to synthesize proteins and enzymes,
and in the process inadvertently replicates the strand of viral DNA (or RNA, depending),
which codes for its own proteins and concentrates within the cell. At some point,
the cell will not be able to support that many viral particles within it's membrane,
and it will die, releasing thousands of new viral particles into the environment to
do the dirty deed all over again.

what is the use of zero in mathematics?

Asked by shiva ram in Hyderabad at   1:42 PM on August 15, 2008

JAMWAL's Answer

The number zero (represented by the digit 0) serves double-duty as a placeholder and a representation of the absence of value in Western mathematics. It can trace its ancestry back 2000 years, but it was popularized in Europe by the mathematician Fibonacci in the 13th century. Without zero, the world as we know it would probably still exist, but it would be far more cumbersome.

The history of zero dates back long before Fibonacci. Babylonians were the first known to use a zero numeral in records dating back to the 3rd century BC, which they represented in a sideways superscript-like notation. The Mayans were the first civilization known to use a form of zero in their system of numerals. Their Long Count calendars, which charted their history, use a glyph meaning the same thing as zero. The first available usage of the glyph dates back to 36 BC, from a site in southern Mexico. The Chinese used zero in computations as far back as the 1st century AD, though the digit itself would not appear until about 600 years later.
