what is CFU

Asked by pardeep in Personal Health at   7:34 AM on June 24, 2008

deepa iyer's Answer

CFU stands for "Colony Forming Unit".
It depends on three things:
1) How many bacteria colonies do you observe? Count them.
2) How much milk sample do you take to culture?
3) What is your dilution factor?

Say, if you have 100 colonies and you use 0.1ml and your
dilution factor is 10^-2

Your CFU/ml would be (100/0.1) x 10^2.

Give in detail, the nutritional needs of the elderly people.

Asked by SUKUMARAN in Personal Health at   8:04 PM on June 13, 2008

deepa iyer's Answer

1. Energy : Energy requirements decrease with age. In addition to a normal decline in metabolism, a sackening of physical activity lowers energy needs still further. RDA call for a reduction of average energy allowances after 51 years of age of 600 Kcal / day for men and 300 Kcal for women.

2. Protein : Body protein in the healthy elderly is 60 to 70% of that of young adults, which might suggest a decrease need for dietary protein. Protein intake is related to energy intake, and although the latter tends to decrease with age, protein intake remains considerably higher than the RDA. Protein needs increase in relation to the severity and duration of disease. Stressful physical and psychologic stimuli can induce a negative nitrogen balance.

3. Carbohydrate : A reduced glucose tolerance renders the elderly more susceptible to temporary hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. Insulin sensitivity may be improved by reducing the use of sugar and by increasing the amount of complex carbohydrate and soluble fiber in the diet.

4. Lipid : The recommended reduction of dietary fat is to no more than 30% of total Kilocalories also supports principles of weight control and cancer prevention.

5. Minerals : The allowances for calcium is the same as for younger adults, while the iron allowance for post menopasual women is the same as that for men i.e. 10mg. Anemia is of rather common occurrence in women, as is also osteoporosis, and a diet liberal in these mineral element is desirable.

6. Vitamins : The allowances for Vitamin A and the ascorbic acid are the same as those for younger adults. The B-complex vitamins are needed in the same proportion of calorie intake as for younger person. However, the reduction in the calorie requirement means that the total daily needs for thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin are likewise lower.

7. Water and Fiber : About 6 to 8 glasses fluid is as essential for the older person as it is for the younger individual. The kidneys can function more adequately when there is sufficient fluid with which to eliminate the waste solids. Water stimulates peristalsis and thus aids in combating constipation. When nocturia is a problem, the individual should be encouraged to take as much water as possible early in the day.

Many older persons select diets that are smooth in character. This choice, together with an inadequate fluid intake, can lead to persistent constipation and often to the use of harmful laxatives and mineral oil. Although rough fiber of tender vegetable, fruits and whole - grain cereals will encourage normal peristalsis.

POSSIBLE CAUSES OF UNDER NUTRITION IN THE ELDERLY

1. Loss of teeth - Denture

2. Lack of attention from the other members of the family

3. If nuclear family, than lonely existence

4. Not very congenial economic conditions.

5. Chronic ailments which affect the appetite, digestion, absorption, resulting in poor nutrition.

6. Ignorance about good nutrition or food preparation

7. Alcoholism

8. Decreased physical ability to buy food or prepare a meal

Drinking too many soft drinks like Coca-Cola,Pepsi etc is harmful to health.Which way it is harmful ?

Asked by SUKUMARAN in Personal Health at   8:01 PM on June 13, 2008

deepa iyer's Answer

"Phosphorus is found in most foods but soda pops, diet popsS contain
especially high amounts. The ideal dietary phosphorus-calcium ratio is about
1:1. The ratio in the average American diet is often greater than 2:1 and
sometimes even 4:1 or 5:1. At those levels, excess calcium is removed from
bone and eliminated, blood levels are reduced, and there is bone
demineralization. A diet high in phosphorus and low in calcium has been
shown to cause bone loss and increase tissue calcification."

"Tooth loss, periodontal disease, and gingivitis can be problems,
especially with a high phosphorus intake, particularly from soft drinks. All
kinds of bone problems can occur with prolonged calcium deficiency, which
causes a decrease in bone mass. Rickets in children, osteomalacia (decreased
bone calcium) in adults, and osteoporosis (porous and fragile bones) can
occur when calcium is withdrawn from bones faster than it is deposited.
Fractures are more common with osteoporosis the United States are related to this prevalent nutritional deficiency
disease"

"High dietary phosphorus, as is found in a diet with meats, soft drinks,
and other convenience foods, can readily affect calcium metabolism.
Potential calcium deficiency symptoms may be more likely when the phosphorus
intake is very high. A low calcium-to-phosphorus ratio in the diet increases
the incidence of hypertension and the risk of colon-rectal cancer."
But soft drinks are far from soft. High in phosphorous and phosphoric
acid, they infiltrate bodily fluids and corrode stomach linings, upset the
alkaline-acid balance of the kidneys, and eat away at your liver like
Hannibal Lecter. Soft drinks also contain hidden caffeine, refined sugar,
and artificial chemicals."

i wanna know the way to control anger. i need it badly.....

Asked by Shivam in Personal Health at   7:30 PM on June 15, 2008

deepa iyer's Answer

So how can we effectively control our anger? Time is a key. For each second between the ’’unfair’’ event & ur reaction, ur chances of making a healthier decision are greatly increased. If that child paused for a few seconds when told he was being punished, he might have come up with a less-damaging alternative action. When ur boss makes ur blood boil, waiting, instead of immediately reacting, will almost always produce more positive results.

But how do u add that ’’cooling off’’ time? 1 easy technique involves breathing. Since anger comes from thoughts of unfairness, replacing such thoughts will buy u time. When cut off in traffic, breath in slowly & count to 20 silently. Pay attention to counting slowly. Focus on ur breathing, making sure to breathe slowly & deeply, in through ur nose & out through ur mouth. Listen to the sound of ur breathing. Feel the motion of the air. Smell of the air.

Another anger management technique is ’’square breathing.’’ Inhale slowly while counting to 5. Hold that breath for a count of 5, exhale slowly for a count of 5, then count to five before the next breath. Continue doing this until u feel less angry & more in control of ur thoughts. Then think about ur choices of how to react & the consequences of each choice. What will get u what u really want?

If more help is needed than simply refocusing ur thoughts through breathing, try having a friend or family member give u clues when u are losing ur temper. This can be difficult, since someone with an anger problem often gets angrier when someone tries to get into the middle of a situation.

Sometimes, seeking professional help is the answer. This is especially true if u find ur anger is frequent & causing real problems in ur work, family or relationships with others. A professional counselor will work with u to help u identify the causes of ur anger & find ways to control ur reactions.

What is treatment for piles other than surgery?

Asked by Parimala in Personal Health at   2:27 PM on June 14, 2008

deepa iyer's Answer

In the initial stages, a lot of treatment options are available such as high fibre diet, Banding[place small rubber bands around the hemorrhoids to cut off the blood supply], Sclerothrapy [inject the hemorrhoids with a drug that drastically shrinks them], Cryotherapy[the hemorrhoid is essentially frozen off], Infra-red coagulation or laser[the hemorrhoid is burned off, cauterizing the ends] etc. These modalities provide good relief in initial stages but do not help much in the later stages of the disease. In advanced stage, only Surgery provides long lasting relief. Now Stapler method of treatment has revolutionized the surgical treatment of piles.
