What was the reason behind the popularity of the film “Rang de Basanti”?

Asked by Neethali in Movies at   4:44 PM on November 30, 2007

Shekhar Deb's Answer

“Either you live with the system bearing all the injustice associated with it or take the responsibility to change it”. “No country is perfect, we have to make it “. Since its launch on January 26, it (Rang De Basanti) has seeped through the veins of this country like a viral, hinting at a contiguous idealism, a common youthful energy that binds the patriots of old with the aesthetes of today. Sleeping idealists : the young have loved the self-image. It has made them feel noble, rung a note of hope. Accustomed to seeing their vacuity constantly magnified on screen in saturated colours and designer labels, stunned by the constant affirmation around them — in films, newspapers, TV channels — that they are pleasure-seeking automatons committed to little but self-love, they have thrilled to the suggestion that they could in fact be Bhagat Singh's in waiting.

What do we mean by Data encryption?

Asked by akbarali in Computers & Technology at   4:00 PM on November 29, 2007

Shekhar Deb's Answer

The Data Encryption Standard (DES) is a cipher (a method for encrypting information) selected as an official Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) for the United States in 1976, and which has subsequently enjoyed widespread use internationally. The algorithm was initially controversial, with classified design elements, a relatively short key length, and suspicions about a National Security Agency (NSA) backdoor. DES consequently came under intense academic scrutiny, and motivated the modern understanding of block ciphers and their cryptanalysis. DES is now considered to be insecure for many applications. This is chiefly due to the 56-bit key size being too small; DES keys have been broken in less than 24 hours. There are also some analytical results which demonstrate theoretical weaknesses in the cipher, although they are infeasible to mount in practice. The algorithm is believed to be practically secure in the form of Triple DES, although there are theoretical attacks. In recent years, the cipher has been superseded by the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).

Which is the best camera available in the market? Can you suggest some good models?

Asked by handsome24 in Electronics & Gadgets at   12:44 PM on November 29, 2007

Shekhar Deb's Answer

Nikon, being well established in the world of photography, needs no introduction. With a brand heritage of almost 5 decades, Nikon is well on its way to drive its long history of expertise into the digital arena. Nikon, Kodak, and Canon are going all out by launching their basic range of digital cameras, trying to cash-in on the digital wave, which is slowly but surely enveloping the consumer photography segment. The 2 MP category is certainly the most fast moving of the lot, all the major brands are focusing hard to strike the right balance between the quality offered and the price commanded. With the technical expertise and the brand image that Nikon enjoys, it's bound to challenge the fellow brands with an enthralling range of entry-level digital cameras. The Coolpix 2100 and 3100 are here to represent Nikon in the clash for the entry-level digital cameras. The basic difference between the Nikon Coolpix 2100 and the 3100 is just the CCD lens being 3 MP in the 3100 as opposed to the 2 MP in the 2100. The image quality is good, colours are brilliant and details are captured very well. The focus is fast and accurate, doing well in most occasions. The image quality is right between the Canon and Kodak; it is slightly softer than the Canon in terms of crispness but crisper than the Kodak images. Colour is brighter and the warm images are visually appealing with vibrant colours. The 3x Nikkor zoom works very well and is fast enough and very accurate at that level of magnification. In lowlight conditions, the Coolpix 2100 does at times lose focus and there is a hint of blur, so the light conditions can at times be a factor. The shooting modes are well implemented with enough room for customization and improvisation as per the prevailing shooting conditions.

What is the use of zip folders?

Asked by Answerme in Computers & Technology at   2:55 PM on November 29, 2007

Shekhar Deb's Answer

The ZIP file format is a popular data compression and archival format. A ZIP file contains one or more files that have been compressed, to reduce their file size, or stored as-is. The format was originally designed by Phil Katz for PKZIP. However, many software utilities other than PKZIP itself are now available to create, modify, or open (unzip, decompress) ZIP files, notably WinZip, BOMArchiveHelper, KGB Archiver, PicoZip, Info-ZIP, WinRAR, IZArc, 7-Zip, ALZip, TUGZip, PeaZip, Universal Extractor and Zip Genius. Microsoft has included built-in ZIP support (under the name "compressed folders") in later versions of its Windows operating system.

What is light therapy? How does it relieve stress?

Asked by harish28 in Stress at   5:04 PM on November 26, 2007

Shekhar Deb's Answer

"light therapy" - the use of light as a treatment for everything from physical disease to psychological disorders. Light Therapy techniques range from the most simple and traditional ("Get outside and get some sunshine and fresh air", as your Grandmother may have told you) to the most high-tech and sophisticated forms of light-assisted psychotherapy (which was developed in California, of course). These therapies may be categorised by the form of light used, from simple to sophisticated: -Bright Light -Coloured Light -Pulsed Light -Coloured Flickering Light -Polarized Light Light therapy consists of exposure to specific wavelengths of light using lasers, LEDs, fluorescent lamps, dichroic lamps or very bright, full-spectrum light, for a prescribed amount of time. It has proven effective in treating Acne vulgaris, seasonal affective disorder, and for some people it has ameliorated delayed sleep phase syndrome. It has recently been shown effective in non-seasonal depression. Proponents claim demonstrable benefits for skin conditions such as psoriasis and, more controversially, a degree of "skin rejuvenation."

what is the secret of Barmuda Triangle?

Asked by Raj in News & Current Affairs at   2:42 PM on November 28, 2007

Shekhar Deb's Answer

So are the paranormal theories just a load of old gas? The Bermuda Triangle has generated thousands of debates between psychic phenomena experts and 'traditional' science ever since Flight 19 disappeared. For over 50 years the public's imagination has run riot, sometimes through lack of understanding, sometimes through media hype, trying to explain the disappearance of dozens of ships, yachts and planes off the coast of Florida. Yet the scientific community's protestations have been very loud and paranormal theories concerning the Bermuda Triangle have been sneered at and derided. Going over the evidence, it could seem that orthodox scientists have been determined to prove that the Bermuda Triangle holds no paranormal influence at all. Yet, overall, it is their theories that seem to be the most logical solutions, not those concerning the paranormal. It is well known that human error is nearly always the answer when dealing with equipment failure. The Bermuda Triangle has many violent, unpredictable and sudden weather changes that could surprise many an unwary navigator. The idea of trapped methane gas being released from 20,000 feet below sea-level may seem far-fetched but the theories of Dr Davidson have been physically studied, not merely hypothesized. But thetruth knows that life isn't always logical and straight- forward. There may have been a media hype about the disappearances but that will never mean orthodox scientists will know all the truth. They know only one truth - so far. Don't forget: no one has explained the reason why at least three areas of the planet Earth have mysterious magnetic forces at work. Why is that...?
