The experienced team of Jonas Bjorkman and Todd Woodbridge, ensured that there would be no Bryan brothers' belly bump to celebrate a US Open men's doubles championship. Instead, the brothers went belly up in a hotly contested, three-set loss, 5-7, 6-0, 7-5. The No.1 seed team, Bhupathi and Mirnyi, lost to the French team, Llodra and Santoro, in the quarter finals (6-2, 6-2).

Bob Bryan and teammate Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia, beat Lina Krasnoroutskaya and Daniel Nestor for the mixed doubles championship, in what became the final match of a memorable 2003 US Open. Score: 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (10-5 in the tie-break). The No.1 seed team, Suarez and Bhupathi, gave up in the second round.

Justine Henin-Hardenne, Belgium. No.2 seed Justine Henin-Hardenne beat her Belgian compatriot and No.1 seed Kim Clijsters, in a jam packed Arthur Ashe stadium to claim her second Grand Slam title of 2003 (She won also the French Open, also beating Kim Clijsters in the final). With a final score of 7-5, 6-1, Henin-Hardenne put in a gutsy performance that lasted a mere 81 minutes. This was her first US Open title. No one believed she could win this match, because her semi-final against Jennifer Capriati was three hours long.

Kirsten Flipkens . This young talented girl (aged 17), has also won the junior tournament in Wimbledon 2003. After this US Open, she decided to stop with the junior tennis (she is now also ranked No.1 in the junior rankings). Kirsten will begin with the senior tennis, starting in the smaller tournaments (ITF tournaments of 10.000 dollar). She is hoping she can reach the top-100 in the WTA ranking, but her coach is more positive: he says she has a good chance of getting into the top-50. She also doesn't want to be compared with Kim Clijsters or Justine Henin-Hardenne, because she will be not as good as these top-2 players (according to her; you can never be sure in tennis).

The dynamic duo of Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suarez, seeded No.2 in the women's doubles draw, clinched their second consecutive US Open doubles title, defeating veteran Martina Navratilova and Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-2, 6-3, in 67 minutes. Clijsters and Sugiyama won the doubles title at the French Open and Wimbledon of 2003. In this tournament, they gave up early in the second round, because of the many rain delays.

Andy Roddick, USA. No.4 seed Andy Roddick cruised to a 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 victory over No.3 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero, to capture the men's singles title at the 2003 US Open. The victory gave the 21-year-old the first Grand Slam title of his career. With the win, Roddick joined Stefan Edberg as the first players to win both the boys' and men's singles titles at Flushing Meadows.
