The causes of polycythemia vera are yet to be confirmed and no known causes are established so far. Yet it is predicted by a number of researchers that the mutation causes the disorder. In the condition mutation of DNA in a single cell in the bone marrow takes place. There is a change in a protein that switches cells to grow. Specially it is the mutation of the proteins JAK2(the JAK2 V617F mutation). The demand for mutation in the DNA be the causative agent is because of the fact that a large majority of population affected with the disorder shows mutation in that particular protein.
