But the ego always exists...even at a very minimal level, it does. With the person who you really love, you must try and keep your ego in utmost control and be conscious of it getting out of hand, whenever it does.

Yes it will...because the sportsmanship spirit would prevail over any other differences of field, in the middle of the game...as the entire team and its supporters would have only one vision, one goal to achieve...to emerge WINNERS.
