The best thing you can do is to carry your favourite music on a portable player and ask the shop if you can test the speakers. Logitech has some good stuff. If money is an issue, you would be better off spending the money on a 2.1 (esp. if you want to mainly hear music).
Philips has a good 5.1 system in terms of sound quality, but it will only work well in a small room.
I own about 4 speaker sets, both 5.1 and 2.1, and i tested many more. At that price you cant get good stuff. But I suggest you assess your needs first. A 5.1 system is only useful for certain Hollywood movies. Spend the money on the sound quality, No point in buying noisy, non- fidelity speakers. not on small bits of speaker that just increase the noise levels.
Try to also listen to your friends's good music systems, to tune your ear. I also would suggest to buy second hand. There probably are many suckers like me who bought 5.1 system to be upset later. Just be careful that they aren't broken, and the REMOTE IS WORKING properly! cause some sets are useless without the remote.
Keep reading and listening. In the end, just enjoy. TC.
