what is the use of the documentary film?? Im very much intrested in making a documentary film.. what should i do after making that,are their any rules to follow

Documentary Films, strictly speaking, are non-fictional, "slice of life" factual works of art - and sometimes known as cinema verite. For many years, as films became more narrative-based, documentaries branched out and took many forms since their early beginnings - some of which have been termed propagandistic or non-objective.

Documentary films have comprised a very broad and diverse category of films. Examples of documentary forms include the following:

* 'biographical' films about a living or dead person (Madonna, John Lennon, Muhammad Ali - When We Were Kings (1996), Robert Crumb, Stephen Hawking in A Brief History of Time (1992), or Glenn Gould)
* a well-known event (Waco, Texas incident, the Holocaust, the Shackleton expedition to the Antarctic)
* a concert or rock festival (Woodstock or Altamont rock concerts (Woodstock (1970) and Gimme Shelter (1970)), The Song Remains the Same (1976), Stop Making Sense (1984), Madonna: Truth or Dare (1991))
* a comedy show (Richard Pryor or Eddie Murphy shows)
* a live performance (Cuban musicians as in Buena Vista Social Club (1998), or the stage show Cirque du Soleil-Journey of Man (2000))
* a sociological or ethnographic examination following the lives of individuals over a period of time (e.g., Michael Apted's series of films: 28 Up (1984), 35 Up (1992) and 42 Up (1999), or Steve James' Hoop Dreams (1994))
* an expose including interviews (e.g., Michael Moore's social concerns films)
* a sports documentary (extreme sports, such as Extreme (1999) or To the Limit (1989), or surfing, such as in The Endless Summer (1966))
* a compilation film of collected footage from government sources
* a 'making of' film (such as the one regarding the filming of Apocalypse Now (1979), or Fitzcarraldo (1982))
* an examination of a specific subject area (e.g., nature- or science-related themes, or historical surveys, such as The Civil War, Jazz, Baseball, or World War II, etc.)
* spoof documentaries, termed 'mockumentaries' (such as This is Spinal Tap (1984), Zelig (1983), and Best in Show (2000))

Hello Vamsidhar,Documentary film is a broad category of visual expression that is based on the attempt, in one fashion or another, to "document" reality. Although "documentary film" originally referred to movies shot on film stock, it has subsequently expanded to include video and digital productions that can be either direct-to-video or made for a television series.

If you don't know what a documentary film is, I don't see how you propose to make one. To be able to make a good one, you'll have to know why they are made, and how, and that process involves studying the genre. The use of the documentary film is many - to document an event, to analyze a phenomenon, to educate, and even to entertain. There are no rules, but you need to know what you are making, and why!

Documentary film as its name indicates, is a film generally shirt in length based on real facts. Eg. A day in Gandhi's life. PM at his breakfast table. All real life incidents. No fiction. Feature films are different in this respect and mostly are lengthy in nature. Any fiction can go into that one. In a documentary the real persons will take part.Gandhi produced and directed by Richard Attenborough is not a documentary as Real Gandhi was not involved and the role of Gandhi was enacted by a professional actor.

Documentary film is basically visual documentation of any visually attractive, educative subject, thought provoking or socially relevant subject. TV channels like DISCOVERY CHANNEL, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHICAL CHANNEL etc have glorified this informative concept that has been so far relegated to back seat. It brings many relevant facts, figures, and places to us through the mode of cinema or TV channel and has proved to be great source of education and information. If you are interested in documentary filmmaking then do contact at FILMS DIVISION office at MAHADEV ROAD, NEW DELHI and can ask for the details. There is always an annual competition that invites entries from all sects and corners of country and the best documentaries are showcased in all coveted film festivals. It would have been better to get yourself professionally equipped by getting educated from institutes like FTII, Pune. It will aware about all the technicalities about filmmaking (lights, sounds, music etc) and will encourage you for better openings in this profession.

the documentary film is based on particular one subject and topic for what he is going to show about his title, and maker of the documentary film clear and touch each and every point of the subjects with perfect documentations, many of documentary are you've watch in discovery channel as well as national geographic channels, now you can understand what does it mean, and how they hard work on it while making. if you want to make you must choose one of the untouched subject to easy to solve the secrets of the subject, and do research on it complete the details then you are ready to shoot, after shoot or complete the docu movie what u have done wait or contact nfdc or such comittee for preview b the audience and let appriciate your work. try this . but it is not a easy job as u think so.remember.

Documentary films are something that are made on reality. You gather facts and make a movie on those facts and shoot the reality.That is what it is all abut. Documentaries are not glamorous movies since the they are mainly based on facts. And there can be no room for error in this kind of movie making. I think the only rule follow is that present the facts as you see them and as you would like your audience to see it.
