Mechatronics is a portmanteau word — a fusion of ‘mechanics’ and ‘electronics’. Mechatronics first originated in Japan in the 1980s. It was used to denote the combination of technologies used to produce industrial robots. Mechatronics can be defined as a synergistic integration of mechanical, electrical and electronics, computer science and IT disciplines to produce or enhance products and systems. Computers, disk drives, photocopiers, fax mac hines, VCR, washing machines, robots are examples of these systems. A specialisation in robotics engineering will lead to potential career opportunities in manufacturing, research and engineering, agriculture, mining, nuclear power-plant maintenance and a variety of other areas.
