Viagra is a drug composed of sildenafil citrate which is extensively used over the world mainly to treat male impotency. This drug also being used in the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension. This drug, Viagra, was developed by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer.
In treating erectile dysfunction, the drug is responsible for degradation of cGMP in the corpus cavernosum. The molecular structure of sildenafil is similar to that of cGMP and acts as a competitive binding agent of PDE5 in the corpus cavernosum resulting in more cGMP and better erections.
Treating PAH, the drug relaxes the arterial wall leading to decreased pulmonary arterial resistance and pressure.
